Consacree ambassadrice de la tradition
afro-peruvienne, Susana Baca n'a pas oublie ses
ambitions premieres. Afrodiaspora renoue ainsi avec
le concept de sa premiere sortie internationale,
Vestida de Vida, dont le repertoire naviguait du
nord au sud des Ameriques noires. Cette nouvelle
traversee part de la cumbia colombienne (Detras de
la Puerta), avant de faire escale sur les rives de
Porto Rico (Plena y Bomba, avec Calle 13), au
Mexique le temps d'une valse folklorique (Que
Bonito tu Vestido), ou dans la moiteur funk de La
Nouvelle-Orleans (Hey Pocky Way, delicieuse reprise
des Meters). La combinaison de la guitare et du
cajon peruviens associee au phrase sensible de la
diva, assure l'impeccable cohesion de cette
odyssee.
Susana Baca, the Peruvian vocalist who first won an
international following with "Maria Lando," a track
on the 1995 David-Byrne-produced The Soul of Black
Peru, has often been compared to Cape Verde's
Cesoria Evora. It's not surprising; both women have
found rich material in folk traditions of their
countries, and both sing songs that are steeped in
the darker emotions: pain, nostalgia, longing.
