▓████▓▌ CD from Jessica Lurie (Living Daylights, Billy ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet) is self-released ▓▌
▓████▓▌ rather than on the Blue Note, Knitting Factory or ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Delmark record labels where it belongs. Lurie leads ▓▌
▓████▓▌ her ensemble though some serious hard bop and post ▓▌
▓████▓▌ bop charts of her own composition with remarkable ▓▌
▓████▓▌ alacrity. Featuring Lurie on alto sax, Sue Orfield ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (also of Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet) ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on tenor sax, Scott Amendola on the drums, Keith ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Lowe on bass, downtown wunderkind Eyvind Kang on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ viola, while Jason Seed and Leif Totusek trade off ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on the guitar duties, when a guitar is called for. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Lurie also ventures in vocalizing on three cuts, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ proving surprisingly adept in this area as well. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "For A Thousand Kisses" is a part-spoken word, part ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sung jazz poem by Lurie that is a tribute to the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ work of Vladimir Mayakovsky, while "J'ai Faim, Moi" ▓▌
▓████▓▌ is a romantic, percussion-driven piece (featuring ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Elizabeth Pupo-Walker) reminiscent of Kip Hanrahan. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ While there is room for improvisation in the music, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Lurie's ensemble is definitely not a jam band; this ▓▌
▓████▓▌ is genuine jazz, based on tightly constructed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ charts. Lurie explores Bulgarian Gypsy themes in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Dreamsville," klezmeresque heads that yield to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ deconstructionist abstractions in "Shut Yer Pie ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Hole," a haunting ballad in a trio setting in "The ▓▌
