Heads up for the selector.
Studio don Glyn "Bigga" Bush throws down an essential collection of
work completed whilst not being a member of Rockers Hi Fi or flashing
science and skills as Lightning Head. Since the demise of Rockers in
1998, re-mixology for artists as wide ranging as Ennio Morricone,
Tapper Zukie and Ella Fitzgerald has brought diversity to the
Biggabush feel. BiggaBush Free swims through an ocean of sound - and
influences abound from Dub to Latino via Hip Hop and lush ambience.
Let the currents pull you.
The trademark BiggaBush vibe is likely to involve deep bass
resonance, chattering percussion and strong melodic themes. From the
opening urgency of Outernational Anthem to the long prog build and
G.RINA's soothing vocal intonations on Self Judgement this CD has got
something for everyone. Dextrous harmonium and driving dhol drums
underpin the swooping Mumbai strings of Michaelangelo. Throwdown lays
a strident yet twisted riff over a gigantic rhythm interrupted by
bass drum detonations and flick-of-the-wrist decknology from rising
DJ Jay Rees. Sole Sister floats us off for a breather through a
shimmering aquatic soundscape before This River drops the dub bass
back into the mix and showcases the drifting, languorous voice of
Sofiah Thom. Acid Fly buzzes by with phonic squelch and ricochet
breaks landing squarely on a fat Chic-ed bassline. Deep Eastwood
spins its' wheels with splashy snares and growling brass until at
2'30" the dubhousebassymayhem breaks free of the echo machine and
rocks the floor with panache. This pandemonium leads into the Big
Chill favourite IOTK a real "where did that one come from?" cut with
the biggest, baddest 3-Dimensional bass snaking its way around
plucked harps and walking rhythms - yet paradoxically leaving us with
the distinct feeling of floating in space. Mouseflex is as nifty a
piece of ambient dub as you're likely to get, an off the wall slice
of rolling electronica with a catchy glitch which bounces the
listener around on a cushion of air bass.
This is how the BiggaBush sound has been evolving for the past few
years and a taste of where he's going next.
An album which rounds 'em up and rolls 'em out. Anyone who spends
their time troubling dancefloors will find this a truly useful bag of
tools.
Free up your speaker box Mr DJ!!!
