Not easy listening: the African roots of Columbian music ôAfritangaö
invites you on a musical journey through Columbia. The title û a play on
the words Africa and the popular "Fritanga" mixed grill plate - is a
conscious neologism and an allusion to the African roots in both the music
and culture of Columbia. ItÆs not European rock or US-American hip-hop
that are role models for the young musicians, but much rather
experimentation with their own musical roots. The result is not easy
listening world music. Fast Champeta grooves meet the psychedelic sounds
of the marimba here; artists such as Cynthia Monta±o or Choc Quib Town
scramble the ôPiano de la selvaö (piano from the jungle) with hip-hop and
softly rapped lyrics from the Choc≤ coffee region. Cumbia, the Columbian
off-beat groove, is also not missing here. Paφto, a master of the gaita
flute, stands for the traditional Cumbia here; the band Systema Solar
plays with sound cards and synthesizers. The album was compiled by Steen
Thorsson aka DJ Chango.
