The group's name & album title are derived from the Portuguese word
"pilantragem", meaning piracy, but also being the name of a musical
movement of the late 1960's, strongly related to the Tropicalia
movement: pilantragem artists "stole" influences from just any
musical genre anywhere. There isn't as much obvious crazy musical
piracy as I hoped here it's no Brazilan version of the Bonzo Dog Band,
but it's still quite an odd musical experience! A couple of tracks are
recorded as if live in a discotheque with that typical go-go sound of
an audience talking and having fun in the background and clapping
along to the music -- one of them sounds like a drunken gigolo
telling jokes to impress some girls. The listener will be confused/
amused in another track that kicks of as a Herb Alpert sound-alike and
then -- bang oops! -- suddenly jumps 1000 km Southward to continue
happily as jazzy samba, only to return swiftly back to Mexico at the
end of the track. The giggling audience in the background is definitely
delighted! Other tracks are also full of breaks, like "Terezinha de
Jesus": from a cheesy organ instro over sexy sighs to go-go Tijuana-
samba, shortly interrupted by an off-key trumpet intermezzo with
laughter and handclapping, and then onwards to hip samba soul leaning
to boogaloo. Can you still follow? Not all tracks are this crazy, and
the album does hold strongly together. The main sound makes you think
this is actually a European band - French maybe, because of the absurd
humor -- playing Brazil soul α go-go.
