This CD is the perfect answer to the chronic complaint that the glory
days of jazz are behind it. Taylor Eigsti, all of 19 years old, is full
of fresh enthusiasm, ideas, and formidable technique, and Resonance,
his national debut on Bop City Records,is nothing short of astonishing.
Eigst salutes the stride tradition in "Oleo" with precision and joy,
and his blazing answer to Chick Corea's question, "Got a Match?" would
be impressive in a pianist of any age. But despite his sensational
chops, this is no show-off CD, since Eigsti's talents go far deeper
than dazzle: there's subtlety in his harmonic choices, imagination in
his conceptions, and deep feeling in his playing. He knows how to build
a solo, and is a talented, versatile composer as well (examples here
include the urgent, funky "Avolation", the thoughtful "Introspection",
and his heartfelt tribute to his "UncleSmith". Meanwhile, "Angel Eyes"
is reharmonized and set in 7/4, while "Somewhere" and "Love Dance"
benefit from new rhythms and energy. Eigsti's empathetic comrades John
Shifflett (bass) and Jason Lewis (drums), his regular working band, are
truly superb, and together created the sly, bluesy groove at the
recording session that became "Juliette". "Cubano Chant" positively
sizzles, and the swinging romp on "Things Ain't What They Used To Be"
recalls Monty Alexander at his playful best. There are traces of
Eigsti's other influences here and there, but they're only nods in
passing, as Eigsti already has his own voice. Resonance may well make
the young virtuoso into a national star; ideally, he will introduce
authentic jazz to a generation that often confuses it with "smoothies."
In any case, it's a terrific CD for anyone who loves the real deal.
