The mighty Cypress Hill, one of the West Coast's top hip-hop
crews for nearly 10 years going, has rarely rested on its
laurels, never hesitating to plant new, often innovative,
seeds in its distinct low-end sound. The trio's fifth
full-length, Skull & Bones, is two records in one: The first
half features an emphasis on brash, old school-flavored
lyricism, while the second rocks out with modern,
neck-snapping rap-core from the 'hoods of Cali. The nasal
delivery of B-Real is in top form on "Another Victory" and
"(Rap) Superstar," as he displays a swifter, more determined
approach compared with that of Cypress's earlier,
glassy-eyed work. The standout "(Rock) Superstar" features
Everlast and the Deftones shredding it up with the group,
proving rather convincingly that Cypress Hill still packs a
mighty punch.
