the german jazz scene wouldn't be the same without till br÷nner.
already at childhood, the young trumpet player was noticed for his
extraordinary musical skills" ... taken from the introduction to
the interview lounge where till br÷nner recently answered jⁿrgen
becker's questions.
but how did it all start? how did the musical career of the
trumpeter, who a few years ago moved to berlin, take its course?
the fact that he comes from a musical family certainly was an
essential factor for his successful musical career. at an early
age, till br÷nner took up the trumpet.
first, he received a classical education and soon discovered his
love for jazz and studied jazz trumpet at the musikhochschule in
cologne. in berlin, he successfully auditioned for the
rias-tanzorchester, which was at that time lead by horst
jankowski, and signed on with the orchestra (since 1995, rias big
band) in our city.
in 1993, he released his debut album generations of jazz where he
played, among others, with ray brown on bass and jeff hamilton on
drums. two years later, followed his cd my secret love, which he
recorded with german colleagues such as walter gauchel or hans
dekker.
one year later, he devoted himself to the german classic schlager
from the ufa days, at times using a jazz quartet and a string
orchestra. schlager songs such as "ich bin von kopf bis fu▀ auf
liebe eingestellt" or "wenn ein junger mann kommt" appeared in the
album entitled german songs. only a year later, till's next cd
midnight was. this time, the style was groove and jazz fusion. on
this recording, till again joined up with internationally known
musicians such as dennis chambers (dr) and michael brecker (ts).
with his fifth cd love, he celebrated his first album with verve
and - as the title suggests - exposed quite a different side of
himself. in a mellow and smooth way, he interprets mainly ballads
and even grabs the microphone.
with his current cd, he continues that approach. here, he turns
towards ballad trumpeter and vocalist chet baker. chattin┤with
chet documents till br÷nners personal vision of the music and
character of chet baker who counts as one of the most charismatic
musicians in jazz history.
contrary to what one would expect, this tribute to the great
trumpeter is not purely jazz but a mix of jazz, pop, swing and
modern club sounds. chattin with chet certainly is a provocative
rearrangement of standards and originals. for instance, the title
track is a technically unique duet with the late chet baker, in
other words, till br÷nner's soloing is mixed with sampled
chet-baker's original solo recordings.
