Sometimes the machines take over, but there are instances when you want
one on your side. Marvin the paranoid android from Hitchhiker's Guide to
the Galaxy was a decent sort who, though continually depressed and
suicidal, was good company in a tight situation, and that one friendly
Cylon from Battlestar Galactica seemed to make a go at it while stranded
on that planet with Starbuck. It just gets nerdier from there. My point
is simply that just because someone uses a computer to realize his music
doesn't mean that it has to be cold, mechanical and devoid of emotion.
Sweden's Chaos Through Programming (aka Rasmus Svensson and possibly
someone else) make computer-based music, but somewhere in their careers
they learned how to imbue their works with a warmth absent in most
electronic music. Despite the glitches, noise, tinny drums and Casio
presets, there is a soul underneath these compositions that's more
concerned with making music than showing off the latest gear or
technique.
"I Hate Myself for Being Such a Narcissist" opens the disc, full of
wimpy synth lines and eight-bit drums straight out of Castle
Wolfenstein. This could get annoying really fast, but it never happens;
CTP develop their sound, adding little surprises -- jazz guitar licks,
snare reverses, etcetera. Even when the track slips into a gabber beat
-- admit it, gabber is usually obnoxious -- the bass drum is soft and
warm and welcoming, never scary. A time-stretched voice (like The
Matrix's Neo after he took the red pill) opens "I Know Buffer Overflow
(Better Than You Do)", but it serves as a sort of announcement --
something like "Hello. Welcome to my world, where for the next seven
minutes you'll experience a muted piano echo layered over a bumpy road
of unfolding static. I'll be back around the five minute mark to make
sure you're okay".
Unlike such collage artists as Richard Devine and Venetian Snares, who
use sound design as a point of focus, CTP assemble music that makes
sense; their tunes flow rather than emphasizing virtuosic programming
and quirky noises -- although there are some really cool noises here.
The sounds they do use are unique, but each is only a single thread in
the tapestry of styles that unfolds throughout You Bitreduced My Heart!
If you're new to electronic music, and specifically its glitchy subset,
this is a good starting point -- one that won't terrorize you with
screeching frequencies, but will hold your attention throughout. These
might just be the droids you're looking for.
NOTE: The title of track six is to long to include in the tag. Complete
title is: "...But one day the band leader is dead and the animals carry
her in a procession through the woods while playing a song".
