| Trumpeter/composer Eddie Gale's second album for the Blue Note |
| label, Black Rhythm Happening, is one of the first genuine sound |
| clashes of the free jazz generation even before Archie Shepp's |
| fabled Attica Blues. Not reissued by the label that released it, |
| San Francisco's Water Records has done the noble deed, as Blue |
| Note seems obsessed with getting consumers to buy the same core |
| label recordings over and again through bogus reissue programs, |
| instead of bringing out the truly amazing and apocryphal stuff in |
| its vaults. Nonetheless, Black Rhythm Happening expands the core |
| vision at the heart of 1968's Ghetto Music by melding out jazz, |
| deep soul, funk, gospel, and Afro-funk α la Fela. Featuring |
| ⁿber-drummer Elvin Jones and Cecil Taylor Unit saxophonist Jimmy |
| Lyons (both of whom previously worked with Gale), the band has |
| grown to an octet instead of a sextet, while the backing chorus ù |
| male and female ù is seven voices. The tunes are, by and large, |
| shorter here, more focused as songs with great, swinging |
| instrumental outbursts from a fiery band that includes three sax |
| players, Gale on trumpet, two basses, Jones on drums, and a |
| percussionist. On "Ghetto Love Night," the chorus seems to sing a |
| cappella with the band coming in to improvise on the melodic |
| theme. At other times, there is gospel call-and-response throwdown |
| between the band and singers, such as on the title track. Other |
| places, such as the mammoth "Look at Teyonda," modalism, soul, |
| jazz, and funk move toward free jazz workouts, but stay inside the |
| parameters of accessibility. The stunning "Mexico Thing," kicked |
| off with a riveting drum solo by Jones, has a front line of |
| players and singers that Mingus would have killed for on Tijuana |
| Moods and Sun Ra ù an employer and friend of Gale's ù would |
| ultimately use as a melodic framework on Lanquidity. The charging |
| out-of-the-box solo Gale plays on the tune is breathtaking with |
| its Ted Curson-like intensity and stands as a counterpoint to |
| Jones' quadruple-time polyrhythms as the vocalists bring in song |
| chants to underscore and dovetail various intervals, tying one to |
| another. This is brilliant, soulful, furious, spiritual music |
| that, in its accessibility, is as visionary and necessary today as |
| when it was recorded. enjoy! |
