No mere rote tribute to enigmatic jazz composer and cornetist Bix
Beiderbecke, "Private Astronomy" is nothing less than the work of one
genius transmitted through the vision of another. Muldaur, a former
Cantabrigian best known for his folk-blues work with Jim Kweskin and
ex-wife Maria Muldaur, set out to rearrange Beiderbecke's five
largely obscure piano pieces for band, strings and voices. In the end,
he took on more familiar numbers, but refused in every case to ape the
original arrangements. The process produced a program both familiar
and endlessly surprising. Thus Muldaur and company (including singer
Loudon Wainwright III and his daughter, Martha) pay tribute to
Beiderbecke in the best possible way: by treating his music as living
legacy full of joy, mystery and swing.
