Horace Andy's stay at Dodd's stable in the early 70's produced
one ineptly titled Best Of compilation and this diamond in the
rough: Horace's best album to date.
He has made plenty of music during the years for producers
too numerous to mention, good ones and some rather boring records
as well - often covering these songs again and again - but it's a
hard or even an impossible task for him to make a better album
than this debut.
Unlike the other andyman, Bob Andy, Horace (nicknamed Sleepy)
never broke up with Coxsone hence we have heard some newly
recorded stuff on Papa Dodd's labels on occasion.
Apart from the classics like Every Tongue Shall Tell, Just
Say Who or the legendary title track the album contains a couple
of cover songs: Ken Boothe's Don't Cry, Cat Stevens' Where Do The
Children Play and Roger Whittaker's horrible Mammy Blue. The latter
one is a good example of Horace's ability to turn an irritating
song into something extraordinarily fascinating. Other songs deal
with ordinary love subject and some biblical themes, too. But it's
the voice and interpretation of Horace that really makes this album
such a brilliant gem - fragile and trembling voice that is
incomparable to no one else. Of course his voice has been copied
(attempts have so far failed) in Jamaica over these years, but no
one beats the original really. Lately Horace has gained some
international recognition by joining the British group Massive
Attack.
An essential album that should be available for every reggae
collector's turntable. Check out for CD release, even though
original vinyl is still available.

clicks, the pops and the hisses (its 1972, heh) and enjoy this
