Up until this point, we have become familiar with
Toronto jazz cats BadBadNotGood through their
sometimes-boisterious, completly on-point covers of
tracks from around the hip-hop genresphere. Whether it's
Waka Flocka Flame or MF DOOM and his various aliases,
these three deft players have given the "kids" a reason
to not think of jazz as "old folks music." Not only
that, but they're showcasing a sharp combination of
technical proficiency, song composition, and
improvisation.
And all three of those skills are on full display for
BBNG's latest single, "Rotten Decay", which is an
original track from the trio. It's definitely influenced
by some of their favorite producers -- most notably
Tyler, the Creator -- but it's also distinctly their
own, particularly the impeccable solos and jams. The
single also features "Hard in da Paint / Wow Rare".
