█░ A native of Berkeley, California, David Murray has a distinctive ░█
█░ voice on the tenor although showing influences of such classic ░█
█░ players as Ben Webster, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins. He is as ░█
█░ comfortable playing free jazz as he is playing a gorgeous ballad, ░█
█░ firmly in the tradition. Now based in Paris, Murray has been ░█
█░ called the premier tenor saxophonist of his generation as well as ░█
█░ the most famous bass clarinetist since Eric Dolphy. His recorded ░█
█░ output has included solo dates, sessions with quartets, quintets, ░█
█░ octets, big bands and duos. In addition, he has recorded with the ░█
█░ Music Revelation Ensemble, Clarinet Summit, Jack DeJohnette's ░█
█░ Special Edition and the World Saxophone Quartet (which he ░█
  █░ co-founded). ░█
  █░ ░█
█░ In 1995 Murray started creating conceptual recording projects ░█
█░ mixing up genres of music and recording in exotic locales. "Fo ░█
█░ Deuk Revue" (ENJ-9318 2) was recorded in Dakar, Senegal and ░█
█░ featured American jazz artists meeting Senegalese master ░█
█░ musicians. "Creole Project" (ENJ-9355 2) presented Murray and his ░█
█░ band in a spirited session recorded in Guadeloupe with some of ░█
█░ that country's native musicians. "Speaking In Tongues" (ENJ-9370 ░█
█░ 2) features the prominent vocals of R&B legend Fontella Bass in a ░█
█░ gospel-jazz hybrid with Murray overseeing new versions of famous ░█
  █░ gospel standards. ░█
  █░ ░█
█░ After these recordings which were decidedly "hybrids", David ░█
█░ Murray now returns to jazz of his own, forward-looking brand ░█
█░ re-establishing the octet format he became known for in the 80s. A ░█
█░ couple of years ago, he began to focus intensely on Coltrane's ░█
█░ work: "I was looking for music that had a lot of energy for me to ░█
█░ practice with. I admired his songs, his arrangements, his ░█
█░ technique, the tempos he chose. But to do this recording, I did ░█
█░ not want to just copy him. The writing, the playing had to have my ░█
█░ signature." The result, "Octet Plays Trane," is both a tribute to ░█
█░ Trane and to Murray and his colleagues and shows Murray's fresh ░█
█░ writing propelling his players. In "Giant Steps," for instance, he ░█
█░ orchestrated Coltrane's original solo for the ensemble from which ░█

█░ the solos burst forth organically. Aside of his harmonic textures ░█
█░ and venturesome rhythmic designs, sax player Murray is also ░█
█░ capable of deeply felt romanticism. He always surprises himself ░█
  █░ and his listeners. ░█
  █░ ░█
