▓████▓▌ single-disc best-of, providing the most ▓▌
▓████▓▌ comprehensive retrospective of this minor British ▓▌
▓████▓▌ '60s singer ever likely to be assembled. As is the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ custom for Marginal, there are no original release ▓▌
▓████▓▌ dates given, though it's evident from the sound ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that the tracks must originate from the early- to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mid-'60s. "Misery" is here, of course, featuring ▓▌
▓████▓▌ strings and the sort of weedy surf-country reverb ▓▌
▓████▓▌ guitar typical of early-'60s, pre-Beatles British ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pop/rock. It's much inferior to the Beatles' ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recording of the same tune and, oddly, has some ▓▌
▓████▓▌ very minor lyric alterations (i.e., beginning ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "You've been treating me bad" instead of "The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ world's been treating me bad," as the Beatles sang ▓▌
▓████▓▌ it). The hits "Up on the Roof" and "You Can Never ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Stop Me Loving You" are here too, along with an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ obscure and unmemorable Goffin-King song ("They're ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Jealous of Me") and a number of Mort Shuman ▓▌
▓████▓▌ contributions, most written with Lynch himself. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Though not without its period charm, this is fairly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tepid early-'60s British pop that's neither soulful ▓▌
▓████▓▌ nor especially well sung, and although there are ▓▌
▓████▓▌ some shades of soul and Brill Building pop, it's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ much closer to teen idol fodder than anything else. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ There isn't a single outstanding song here, other ▓▌
▓████▓▌ than the covers of "Misery" and American soul and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Brill Building hits, none of which Lynch interprets ▓▌
▓████▓▌ too well. Considering that Lynch was the first guy ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to cover a Beatles song, it's ironic that this CD ▓▌
▓████▓▌ symbolizes the very sort of lukewarm pop/rock that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the Beatles would drive out of business in a year ▓▌
▓████▓▌ or two. ▓▌
