▓████▓▌ Here's a quirky little change of pace: an album ▓▌
▓████▓▌ re-release featuring fewer songs than were on the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ original. Whatever reason Bluesanct and/or the band ▓▌
▓████▓▌ might have had for leaving off a few of the tracks ▓▌
▓████▓▌ included on The Untied States' original, 52-copy ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (!) 2002 edition, the result is that this ▓▌
▓████▓▌ collection of songs, though by the author's own ▓▌
▓████▓▌ admission not really intended for release, provides ▓▌
▓████▓▌ as solid an example of lo-fi Americana as any ▓▌
▓████▓▌ listener could want. In fact, even taking into ▓▌
▓████▓▌ account the strengths of Elephant Micah's more ▓▌
▓████▓▌ experimentally interesting Your Dreams Are Feeding ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Back, this may be Joe O'Connell's best collection ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of songs yet. So much the better, then, that its ▓▌
▓████▓▌ listenership is poised to move beyond the rarefied ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ranks of harder-than-hardcore EM fans. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Whether the "untied" in the album's title is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ intended to imply a lack of cohesion or simply to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ make a pun, the pervading sense of lo-fi brilliance ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on each successive track is more than enough to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ provide a strong thematic backdrop. O'Connell's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tales of love and the vagaries of life are far less ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ornamented here: the typical instrumentation ▓▌
▓████▓▌ centers around the acoustic guitar, the banjo and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ various inobtrusive percussive effects. The ambient ▓▌
▓████▓▌ noises and sonic ephemera that pervade Your Dreams, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ though present, are not nearly as important a part ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of the music here. If you've heard both, it's hard ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to avoid the conclusion that, however much the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ effects may add to his sonic pallette, O'Connell ▓▌
▓████▓▌ may well write his best work in their absence. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ While the meaninglessly named "%%%%%%" and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "#########" provide a couple of vocal-less sound ▓▌
▓████▓▌ collages, most of the rest of the album rests on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the honesty of pure music, simply played, and good ▓▌
▓████▓▌ lyrics solidly delivered. "There is a place between ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the two / greatest states of the union. / Sometimes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ I can see it in / my sleep": the America that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ O'Connell summons is both everyday and ethereal. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "The whole thing seems lit up / with divine light." ▓▌
▓████▓▌ These lines are drawn from the two installments of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Ohio Arch" and its reprise. Together, the track's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ two sections form a nine-minute dream travelogue ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that leaves the listener drifting down a slow ▓▌
▓████▓▌ river, suffused with the weight of the past. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Cleverly, the song's two sections are separated by ▓▌
▓████▓▌ six other tracks, so that by the time the familiar ▓▌
▓████▓▌ theme returns to your ears, all of the ground ▓▌
▓████▓▌ covered since the first installment feels of a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ piece. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The Untied States is not technically a "new" album, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ but its original release was so limited that, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ statistically, it's vanishingly unlikely that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ anyone reading this has ever heard any of these ▓▌
▓████▓▌ songs. In that sense, then, we can safely say that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ this album is a worthy new addition not only to the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ growing body of Elephant Micah's fascinating ▓▌
▓████▓▌ output, and another jewel in the excellent ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bluesanct label's crown. You almost certainly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ didn't pick it up the first time. Don't let the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ same mistake happen again ▓▌
