█ Being a huge fan of the band ever since their █
█ first full-length came out in 2005, I have been █
█ anticipating this release for a long time.. Four █
█ years is quite a lot of time to write an album. █
█ When looking back at their first two albums, you █
█ easily realize that they have changed their █
█ formula between As Long as it Flows and ... In █
█ these days of Violence. The first was a sort of █
█ thrash/viking-folk crossover with high-pitched █
█ harsh vocals while the second one was death/thrash █
█ crossover with low growls. What to expect from █
█ then? Let me tell you that they once again managed █
█ to deliver. █
█ While their last album offered a rather homogenous █
█ rapid rate style of death/thrash, Raven's Call to █
█ Annihilation is crafted in the same vein as the █
█ first album. You can hear a lot of different █
█ influences in there. Being first a thrash band, █
█ straight in your face songs are the most common. █
█ The Dead Will Walk the Earth, Darker Days lie █
█ Ahead and Warlock might well be the best thrashers █
█ on this album. They all start with mid-tempo █
█ NWOBHM riffs and include solid fast thrashy riffs █
█ with fast shredding sections. The band chose to █
█ take a new direction in the vocal department. █
█ Benoit switched from deep low growls to a sort of █
█ low tone viking yelling. However, the drum format █
█ really hasn't changed. Straightforward Slayer-ish █
█ drums. █
█ The band, having slowed up the tempo since In █
█ These Days of Violence, brings back old school █
█ influence. You can definitly hear Iron Maiden █
█ influences on the title track and the instrumental █
█ The Curse. Need more NWOBHM? Even Judas Priest is █
█ represented on the instrumental Innter Turmoil. █
█ For fans of Megadeth's Rust In Peace, you will █
█ surely appreciate Warlock. Also coming back is a █
█ short clean guitar instrumental (Remembering the █
█ Gods) that is well composed. █
█ Raven's Call to Annihilation offers one certainty: █
█ Talamyus, while staying true to themselves, are █
█ able to evolve in their musical journey. This gem █
█ greatly differs from each of their first two █
█ full-lengths and is yet as good. This album is █
█ almost like a tribute to the bands that must've █
█ amazed these guys in their youth. Iron Maiden, █
█ Judas Priest and Megadeth, to name a few, are very █
█ obvious influences in the writing of this album. █
█ Yet, Talamyus manages to pay tribute to these █
█ metal gods while staying in their comfort (thrash) █
█ zone. They do it in a way where they're only █
█ influeced by these bands, they do not steal or █
█ copy riffs or melodies. They recreate a certain █
█ mood by using parts they came up with and mix them █
█ up with their distinctive thrash/viking crossover █
█ type of metal. I must say that it took me at least █
█ 6 or 7 listens to only start to get used ot the █
█ new vocals. I'm now starting to appreciate them █
█ but the vocals are the reason why I'm removing 5% █
█ on the final note. Let's just say it would be a █
█ near perfect note if the vocals had been like █
█ those found on the first two releases. Everything █
█ else is just almost perfect and I will certainly █
█ listen to this album fairly regularly. █
