acid test 05, ?trance me up (i wanna go higher)? comes from
achterbahn d?amour ? the german duo of well-known iron curtis and
his lesser spotted pal edit piafra. confusingly, despite the
titles, it?s neither acid nor trance, but instead solid, raw,
organic and classicist house music. the a-side and titular track is
like a lost relative of john osborn?s recent ?epoch? workout on his
own tanstaafl? all firm house frameworks, overtly snappy snares and
warm, inviting atmospheres. it recalls the jack of chicago and the
depths of detroit perfectly as various tense base notes dive deep
in the background. the second half is more colourful with chord
stabs, rising synth euphoria and the inner workings of various
analogue machines all laid out bare.
?adult movies? is more languid and groovy than sinewy, where soft
male vocals, melancholic piano notes and long lingering sub swells
all conjure an emotional sense of loss. a musical bassline wanders
its way through the arrangement and makes for something that?s as
intriguing as it is sombre. personal current faves skudge step up
to remix ?trance me up?, stripping the whole thing back to a few
bold, barrel chested loops that warble on and on in typically
efficient manner. it?s exactly what you?d expect from the duo and
the acid line which eventually creeps in makes it all the more
essential.
