▓████▓▌ during 1966-69 charles lloyd led one of the most ▓▌
▓████▓▌ popular groups in jazz, a unit that played at the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ rock palace fillmore west in san francisco and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ toured the u.s.s.r. lloyd's music, although ▓▌
▓████▓▌ generally a bit melodic, was not watered-down and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ managed to catch on for several years during a time ▓▌
▓████▓▌ when jazz was at its low point in popularity. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ lloyd played locally in memphis (including with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ b.b. king and bobby blue bland) and then in the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mid-'50s moved to los angeles to attend usc. during ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his six years in l.a., he gigged around town and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ played alto with gerald wilson's orchestra. in 1961 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ he joined the chico hamilton quintet on flute and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tenor, making his recording debut and gaining a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ strong reputation. during 1964-65 he was with the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ cannonball adderley sextet and then in mid-1965 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ formed his own group. by 1966 the charles lloyd ▓▌
▓████▓▌ quartet included keith jarrett, cecil mcbee (who ▓▌
▓████▓▌ was later succeeded by ron mcclure) and jack ▓▌
▓████▓▌ dejohnette and the band was the hit of the 1966 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ monterey jazz festival, recorded steadily, toured ▓▌
▓████▓▌ europe six times and was remarkably popular. lloyd, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ whose most famous composition is "forest flower," ▓▌
▓████▓▌ played tenor in a soft-toned version of john ▓▌
▓████▓▌ coltrane while his lyrical flute playing is more ▓▌
▓████▓▌ original. after his group changed personnel in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 1969, lloyd gradually faded out of music, becoming ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a teacher of transcendental meditation. the few ▓▌
▓████▓▌ records he made in the 1970s were quite spiritual ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and bordered on new age. however pianist michel ▓▌
▓████▓▌ petrucciani looked lloyd up in the early '80s and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ persuaded him to return to active playing. for a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ period petrucciani was in his quartet. by the late ▓▌
▓████▓▌ '80s lloyd had a new group with pianist bobo ▓▌
▓████▓▌ stenson, bassist palle danielsson and drummer jon ▓▌
▓████▓▌ christensen that regularly recorded for ecm. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ charles lloyd, whose style remains virtually ▓▌
▓████▓▌ unchanged from the 1960s, has recorded as a leader ▓▌
▓████▓▌ for columbia, atlantic, kapp, a&m, blue note and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ecm. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ a very adaptable drummer, billy higgins came to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ fame playing with ornette coleman's quartet, but ▓▌
▓████▓▌ proved to be an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ expert bop player too. he started his career ▓▌
▓████▓▌ playing r&b and rock in the los angeles area, then ▓▌
▓████▓▌ teamed up with don ▓▌
▓████▓▌ cherry and james clay in an unrecorded group called ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the jazz messiahs. in the mid-'50s, higgins started ▓▌
▓████▓▌ rehearsing with ornette coleman. he was on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ coleman's first records (starting in 1958), came to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ new york, and played with coleman during 1959-1960, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ before ed blackwell (who was actually his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ predecessor) replaced him. higgins and blackwell ▓▌
▓████▓▌ were both on coleman's monumental free jazz album, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and higgins would participate in occasional ▓▌
▓████▓▌ reunions with ornette coleman through the years. he ▓▌
▓████▓▌ kept busy during the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ freelancing with a countless number of major ▓▌
▓████▓▌ players including recordings with thelonious monk, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ steve lacy, sonny rollins, lee morgan, donald byrd, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ dexter gordon, jackie mclean, hank mobley, mal ▓▌
▓████▓▌ waldron, milt jackson, art pepper, joe henderson, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pat metheny, and david murray's big band. from 1966 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on, higgins also often played with cedar walton's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ trio, and later with the timeless all-stars. based ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in los angeles during most of the 1980s and '90s, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ billy higgins became an inspiration to younger ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musicians (including the members of the b sharp ▓▌
▓████▓▌ quartet and black/note), opening the world stage as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a performance venue and recording label. in the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mid-'90s, higgins underwent a successful liver ▓▌
▓████▓▌ transplant, but by 2001 was playing out less, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ hampered again by liver problems. sadly, liver and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ kidney failure would result in his passing on may 3 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of that year. he will be remembered as both a jazz ▓▌
▓████▓▌ supporter and player. thankfully, since he played ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on over 700 recordings, one could do a lot ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of remembering. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ billy higgins, offer perhaps an even more fitting ▓▌
▓████▓▌ epitaph for the great drummer than the previously ▓▌
▓████▓▌ issued water is wide and companion album hyperion ▓▌
▓████▓▌ with higgins, both with the lloyd sextet. these ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sides were recorded just five months before ▓▌
▓████▓▌ higgins' death. the music is divided into eight ▓▌
▓████▓▌ suites, and the two men pulled every trick out of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the kit bag for these sessions. lloyd mans his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ usual array of saxophones and flutes as well as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sings and plays taragato, tibetan oboe, and piano. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ higgins, on the other hand, in addition to his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ever-dancing style of drumming, plays blues guitar, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ guimbri, various hand drums, and the syrian ▓▌
▓████▓▌ one-string lute. the combinations are intimate yet ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the music is sprawling in its reach. whether in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ duet or in the various solos included ù notable is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "all this is that: blues tinge," on which higgins ▓▌
▓████▓▌ plays a stellar delta blues on acoustic guitar and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sings ù the notion that there are no boundaries and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ no time, that everything must get onto tape, is the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pervasive m.o. here are two men who know each other ▓▌
▓████▓▌ so well that the anticipation of utterance comes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ from the least likely sources. egos have no place ▓▌
▓████▓▌ here, and neither does didactic discussion. here, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ notions of song, tonality, sonorous expression, and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ spirituality are the guidelines for trying to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ get to feelings, nuances, and individual places ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that they've not traveled before. they succeed in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ spades. despite its smallness and the quiet spirit ▓▌
