▀ ▐ looks less like an international DJ than a 14-year-old ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ maths prodigy who has just won a place at Oxford. ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ His outsider status makes this the most unusual ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ DJ-Kicks release in the series' nine-year history. ▌ ▀

▀ ▐ Erlend Oye has his principles. No talking during work ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ is one of them. As a DJ, you have responsibilities: ▌ ▀

▀ ▐ of no help. When the air is so thick that you could ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ slice it, abstain from hard edged cuts. When Erlend Oye ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ spins - albeit with only six CDs, one record and a ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ microphone - he makes sure that there's not only fresh ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ beats, but also fresh air. He is a champion of the ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ otherwise poorly executed field of musicians to ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ audience hospitality. It makes the Norwegian an oddity ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ in Berlin, and one of a kind. ▌ ▀

▀ ▐ In his addition to the "DJ Kicks" series from !K7, the ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ singer, DJ and part-time popstar uses his strict rules ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ for song-writing, sometimes moderates the tracks like a ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ wedding disc jockey and combines a Smiths classic with ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ a R╘yksopp remix to create a solid mix. That this ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ succeeds is as amazing as the discovery that the piano ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ also has black keys. ▌ ▀

▀ ▐ "The Black Keys Work"- indeed they do: they allow for ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ an empty fifth between B and F sharp minor, the two ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ tonal centres of the original composition. In the space ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ between is enough room for not only the century-old ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ debate between major and minor, but also an abundance ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ of melancholy and the realization that "Kissing is nice ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ but hard." ▌ ▀

▀ ▐ The single from the "DJ Kicks" long player includes not ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ only the Phonique remix, but begins with the original ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ version followed by a Phonique Dub-Remix. With his ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ a-cappella version Oye remains the "Singing DJ". All of ▌ ▀
▀ ▐ the tracks demonstrate what had begun to crystalize on ▌ ▀
