█ From Boomkat: █
█ Known for his work as part of the band Oceansize, Richard A. Ingram now █
█ sets about a solo career with this rather magnificent collection of █
█ ambient concoctions. From the beginnings of the not altogether cheery █
█ 'Kll Thm II..." it becomes clear that Ingram gravitates towards the █
█ darker side of beatless, electroacoustic soundscaping, taking fluid, █
█ almost BoC-esque synth lines and intermingling them with threads of █
█ grimy room sounds and airy suspense. Following up, 'De Montfort' █
█ establishes a more melodic palette, leaving processed piano chords █
█ sustaining off into the distance while strange acousmatic rattling █
█ noises rise and fall like irregular percussion in the background. The █
█ quiet, doomy vibrations of 'The Consolamentum' sound like a sound design █
█ exercise for a horror film during their early stages, with buzzing noise █
█ fragments evoking fluorescent bulbs on the blink while various other █
█ sonic scene-setting devices help stir up an atmosphere of overall █
█ discomfort. The piece eventually returns to more obviously musical fare █
█ with some grim guitar vexations, leading into the equally spine-tingling █
█ 'Beziers', which latches onto some countrified, gothic six-string █
█ soloing. From here on, glimmers of light poke through the stuttering █
█ tape and lonesome acoustic passages of 'The Melioramentum', before '... █
█ Gd Wll Rcgnz Hs wn' wraps up the album with a droning ascent towards a █
█ thick fog of hiss, functioning as a fitting anti-crescendo. █
█ Consolamentum is a very strong debut, to be filed alongside works by the █
█ likes of Svarte Greiner and Jasper TX. Highly recommended. █
