█ Sassoon's War Poems were written during and after the first world war, █
█ during which he was decorated for bravery, but also risked being █
█ court-marshalled for publicly stating his pacifist views on the war. █

█ I was, and am, very sensitive to the poems' atmosphere of closeness; █
█ they make me feel as if Sassoon were trying to comfort me in the absurd █
█ turmoil of the trenches. █
