█░ Liner Notes: ░█
█░ The first piano trios with acoustic bass and drums appeared in ░█
█░ jazz only after the first developments of the new musical idiom ░█
█░ had been consolidated. Piano trios could actually be considered as ░█
█░ one of the first signs of modern day jazz. Later, from the sixties ░█
█░ up till now, they have played a leading role in its evolution. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ In piano trios all the qualities of the contemporary jazz language ░█
█░ (reharmonizations, the interaction between soloists and the rhythm ░█
█░ section, the balance between improvised and written parts) are ░█
█░ boiled down to their essence and deprived of any unnecessary ░█
█░ embellishments. Nowadays, no other format stimulates the ░█
█░ collective creative spirit as much, without restricting individual ░█
█░ freedom, as the trio does. There is almost no other context in ░█
█░ which the listener can so clearly perceive the results of a good ░█
█░ interaction between the members of a band. Watching a great piano ░█
█░ trio perform is a marvellous experience: you hear music which is ░█
█░ apparently being created spontaneously but you also feel that it ░█
█░ has to follow some kind of secret codes which enable the players ░█
█░ to answer each other's questions before they have even been asked. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ It is therefore no surprise that in fifteen years of Valencian ░█
█░ jazz recordings nobody had so far dared to make a piano trio ░█
█░ record. The art of the trio requires solid foundations to be truly ░█
█░ convincing. Valencian pianists have always had a featured soloist ░█
█░ on their records. Ricardo Belda himself did so in his first and ░█
█░ only recording so far, Habitacion blanca ("White Room") (EGT), ░█
█░ back in 1990. Now, together with Luis Llario and Felipe Cucciardi, ░█
█░ he has finally decided to take a step forward with this trio ░█
█░ recording, which will undoubtedly mean a turning point in his ░█
█░ career. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ The recording of Habitacion blanca was the result of a jazz ░█
█░ contest which he won in 1987. At that time Ricardo Belda (born in ░█
█░ 1960) was one of the foremost representatives of a new breed of ░█
█░ Valencian jazz musicians who helped establish jazz as a normalized ░█
█░ musical idiom in the Valencian Community in the eighties. Although ░█
█░ Belda used to perform with his trio at several Spanish jazz ░█
█░ festivals, he eventually chose to back touring American guest ░█
█░ soloists such as Johnny Griffin, Sonny Fortune, Junior Cook and ░█
█░ Wallace Roney, among others. He also played with guitarist Ximo ░█
█░ Tebar and with the acclaimed Spanish pop band Presuntos ░█
█░ Implicados. However, a few years ago he decided to give up the ░█
█░ weariness of the life on the road and devote himself more to the ░█
█░ local jazz scene while at the same time taking up a busy teaching ░█
█░ schedule. He has also been featured both as a player and an actor ░█
█░ in the play El pianista del oceano (based on an Alessandro Baricco ░█
█░ novel), in which he plays all the music live. He has repeated the ░█
█░ experience in 2003 with the play Lennon, written by Jaume ░█
█░ Policarpo. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ Luis Llario and Felipe Cucciardi have been the other two members ░█
█░ of the trio for more than fifteen years. They have shared loads of ░█
█░ experiences with Ricardo, especially playing in the Ximo Tebar ░█
█░ Band or backing American guest soloists. There aren't many steady ░█
█░ bands in Spain who can boast of this kind of seniority. In ░█
█░ Valencia they are often referred to as THE Rhythm Section. They ░█
█░ are the first-call choice for singers and soloist who need a ░█
█░ strong, reliable backing group. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ The repertoire of this CD draws on jazz standards (Benny Golson, ░█
█░ Cedar Walton, Thelonious Monk, Thad Jones, Duke Ellington) and ░█
█░ movie or show tunes. These are songs that Belda, Llario and ░█
█░ Cucciardi have played together for a long time. The CD shows the ░█
█░ high level of artistry that the trio has achieved following the ░█
█░ footsteps of their great predecessors. Belda is also a composer ░█
█░ but he prefers to unveil this side of him in a future project. For ░█
█░ any listener, from Valencia, Madrid, New York or Singapore, My ░█
█░ Ideal shows above all the effort of three musicians at the peak of ░█
█░ their faculties. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ The repertoire of the record lies in the tradition of the bebop ░█
█░ and hard bop schools which have produced so many excellent ░█
█░ examples of piano trios. The CD starts with a brilliant rendition ░█
█░ of Whisper Not with an open introduction, much in the style of ░█
█░ Keith Jarrett, although the trio doesn't follow a particular ░█
█░ model. Belda is a typical self-taught jazz musician with a fresh, ░█
█░ open attitude: he has simply taken from every master what he likes ░█
█░ most. Llario, on the other hand, is a highly melodic bass player, ░█
█░ in the line of Scott La Faro (you can hear it in several solos). ░█
█░ The faultless and exquisite playing of drummer Felipe Cucciardi, ░█
█░ with touches of Blakey, Taylor and Haynes, gives the trio ░█
█░ definitely a genuine classic sound. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ The arrangements have been kept very simple so that the ░█
█░ fifty-and-something minutes of music flow past very smoothly. The ░█
█░ CD is full of little details which enhance the whole: the lovely ░█
█░ bossa nova beat in My ideal, the dramatic stop chorus in ░█
█░ Cottontail, the piano solo introduction in Eronel or the trading ░█
█░ of fours and eights between the bass player and the drummer (with ░█
█░ brushes) in Bye Bye Blackbird. The CD sounds very natural but, ░█
█░ although it may seem a paradox, achieving a natural sound is far ░█
█░ from simple. The desire to avoid a facile sense of drama or ░█
█░ extravaganza is a symptom of maturity at a time when pianists seem ░█
█░ almost forced to act as Tony Manero or play Bee Gees tunes to be ░█
█░ considered as cult musicians. In my opinion what Ricardo, Luis and ░█
█░ Felipe have done deserves much more credit. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ I'm glad that Belda, who always finds time to involve himself in ░█
█░ other people's projects, has finally decided to carry out a ░█
█░ project of his own thirteen years after his first recording. Many ░█
█░ things have happened since then, apart from the transition of ░█
█░ vinyl records to CDs. The jazz scene is livelier and the Spanish ░█
█░ audience is also much more receptive to piano trios, according to ░█
█░ Ricardo. Ricardo has also grown as a musician since that first ░█
█░ recording: he has acquired the maturity and wisdom that only many ░█
█░ miles and many hours of playing music can give. ░█
