█ It is said to never judge a book by its cover and apparently the same █
█ applies for albums. I, unfortunately, have rarely stuck by this ethos █
█ and for good reason; I trust musicians. An artistÆs ability to visually █
█ translate the concepts and ideas of something judged aurally is rarely █
█ inaccurate and I have seldom found a record I enjoy that does not carry █
█ album artwork befitting its musical content. This is no exception with █
█ A-Sun AmissaÆs latest offering Desperate In Her Heavy Sleep. Jet-black █
█ text bitten in to a washed out monochrome radiated sky, images of misted █
█ windows and blinding lights asphyxiated by the darkness they struggle to █
█ illuminate. My immediate expectations are of something spacious and █
█ foreboding, dark but not wholly evil. Naturally, the artwork didnÆt lie. █
█ █
█ The album follows close in the footsteps of the Leeds based trioÆs █
█ previous EP Beneath The Heavy Tides released on Hibernate Recordings, █
█ continuing their familiar minimalist droning soundscapes to a fuller and █
█ more mature effect. The use of the word heavy in their titles appears to █
█ be an important and recurring feature, one that perfectly exemplifies █
█ the musical content within. There is a firm density of bone crushing █
█ weight that lays heavily on the chest yet light on the ears. █
█ Paradoxically the tracks remain sparse in their instrumentation, █
█ infrequently using more than three (perceived) sound sources at any one █
█ given time. It is not a literal sonic intensity or thick wash of noise █
█ that is heavy, nor the epithet commonly used for Rock and Metal music, █
█ but it is instead the emotional volume and suffocating mood that is █
█ generated. A heavy atmosphere despairing face down in open palms. █
█ █
█ This is music for a dystopian world. Cold and paranoid pitch-black █
█ nights in a graveyard of long shadows, church bells and rattling chains, █
█ married with journeys across a desolate expanse of void set under a █
█ blazing nuclear Sun. Piercing chainsaw screams of an unknown machine █
█ echo from a distance while the metallic scratches of a rusted blade █
█ dragging against stone lunges and spasms into the foreground. I fear █
█ listening to this music on the move, afraid I may end up huddled in █
█ corner, cowering and whimpering, mistaking the accidental nudges of █
█ fellow passengers of my commute to be the bony hands of death, beckoning █
█ me to my demise. The apocalyptic spaghetti western twang of Dislocated █
█ Harmony: Into Small Cold Eyes / Several Miles Above rings out over a █
█ vast and barren landscape, its back turned to a decaying city of █
█ mechanical screams muffled from under concrete. The plate-reverb caked █
█ tremolo guitar makes a return in highlight of the album A Hungover █
█ Whisper: Thin Light Failure / Decay where screeching strings of a violin █
█ creak like wheels of an upturned wagon spinning in a post-fallout wind. █
█ But just before you reach for the gasmask, album finisher Ceremony █
█ creeps in with a wave of optimism, a sense of salvation albeit with an █
█ undercurrent of tension. █
█ █
█ It should be reiterated that this album is about darkness, not to be █
█ mistaken for evil. Its themes are survival and survival. As the liner █
█ notes state: æthe heaviness of the day grew long and tiresome. What was █
█ left??? Nothing but a void ( )à.to be alive is enoughÆ █
