██▌ Ever since the ska explosion of the early 1960s, successive ▐██
██▌ Jamaican music crazes have had a massive impact around the world. ▐██
██▌ However mento is one of the island's less well known genres. ▐██
██▌ ▐██
██▌ Mento (which contains the seeds of reggae) has always been ▐██
██▌ overshadowed by its better known Trinidadian cousin, calypso, ▐██
██▌ which dominated Caribbean music from the 1930s to the 1950s. So ▐██
██▌ it's not surprising that many of the artists on this compilation ▐██
██▌ actually marketed their music as calypso. ▐██
██▌ ▐██
██▌ Mento shared calypso's tendency for lyrics filled with wry social ▐██
██▌ commentary and sexual innuendo, but had a more rural feel as well ▐██
██▌ as using markedly different instruments such as the banjo, bamboo ▐██
██▌ wind instruments and the rumba box (giant thumb piano or ▐██
██▌ kalimba). ▐██
██▌ ▐██
██▌ As the sleeve notes by Steve Barrow and Paul Coote explain, when ▐██
██▌ mento was taken up by urban groups, piano and brass were often ▐██
██▌ added, bringing a jazzy sophistication to the music. ▐██
██▌ ▐██
██▌ The songs all feature rollicking percussion and have a ▐██
██▌ light-hearted carefree swing, even when tackling serious subjects ▐██
██▌ such as slum housing conditions (on Hubert Porte's "Dry Weather ▐██
██▌ House"). ▐██
██▌ ▐██
██▌ Another highlight is Hubert Porte's "Monkey Talk", which compares ▐██
██▌ humans with monkeys and finds the former wanting: "A monkey ▐██
██▌ wouldn't use a gun or a knife / to rob his own woman of her life ▐██
██▌ / but there's one thing you must understand / a lady monkey ▐██
██▌ wouldn't two-time her man". ▐██
██▌ ▐██
██▌ These recordings have been salvaged from vintage vinyl, but the ▐██
██▌ high level of musicianship within them makes it easy to ignore ▐██
██▌ their primitive sound quality. ▐██
██▌ ▐██
██▌ If you enjoy Mento Madness, the good news is that mento is still ▐██
██▌ made today by a handful of artists such as The Jolly Boys and ▐██
██▌ Stanley Beckford (who sounds remarkably like Harold Richardson on ▐██
██▌ this CD). ▐██
██▌ ▐██
██▌ It's also heartening to find a re-issue that acknowledges the ▐██
██▌ difficulty of tracing the writers of such old material and ▐██
██▌ invites "anybody with information concerning the origination of ▐██
██▌ these classic tunes" to get in touch - presumably with view to ▐██
██▌ distributing royalties. ▐██
