█ █ Another one of Italy's best (although █ █
█ █ somewhat dubious) examples of its crime █ █
█ █ film potential, made a little bit after █ █
█ █ the genre's height in 1976. The plot is █ █
█ █ somewhat standard and cookie-cutter but █ █
█ █ director Mario Caiano gives it an █ █
█ █ extremely violent and brutal edge which █ █
█ █ few of the genre can really compete █ █
█ █ with. On top of that, it still remains █ █
█ █ somewhat action-packed and exciting, █ █
█ █ something that Umberto Lenzi's similarly █ █
█ █ dark film Almost Human can't match. █ █
█ █ Your standard police inspector who █ █
█ █ "doesn't play by the rules" is here █ █
█ █ played by a scrawny young Leonard Mann █ █
█ █ (The Humanoid, Cut and Run), who looks █ █
█ █ suspiciously similar to Rob Morrow from █ █
█ █ TV's "Northern Exposure". Mann tries to █ █
█ █ make up for his lack of presence and █ █
█ █ charisma by speaking up really loud out █ █
█ █ of the side of his mouth. Of course, █ █
█ █ because of this he does invoke a few █ █
█ █ instances of unintended humor, but he's █ █
█ █ great at the fight scenes so it's hard █ █
█ █ to complain. Mann goes about breaking up █ █
█ █ bank robbery rings and harrassing a █ █
█ █ little kid named "Gennaro" played by the █ █
█ █ same actor who played "Gennarino" in █ █
█ █ Violent Naples... this film is sort of █ █
█ █ an unofficial sequel I presume, seeing █ █
█ █ as the kid plays essentially the same █ █
█ █ character and still has his limp from █ █
█ █ the tragic ending of the first film. █ █
█ █ To support his gambling habit, local mob █ █
█ █ boss Henry Silva (Megaforce, Free Hand █ █
█ █ for a Tough Cop) and his gang perform a █ █
█ █ daring daylight robbery of a money █ █
█ █ train. He messes up though when he kills █ █
█ █ one of his own men merely for being █ █
█ █ wounded by police in the huge shootout. █ █
█ █ A noticably peeved Mann shows up later █ █
█ █ to fume over the pile of bodies, and █ █
█ █ somewhere in there recognizes one of the █ █
█ █ bodies as one of Santoro's (Henry █ █
█ █ Silva's) men. This leads to a couple █ █
█ █ funny scenes of Mann following Silva █ █
█ █ around his mansion constantly asking him █ █
█ █ "why'd you do it, Santoro?" with Silva █ █
█ █ responding "you're making a mistake, I'm █ █
█ █ a law abiding citizen"... because of █ █
█ █ course Mann has no proof. This goes on █ █
█ █ for a good 10 minutes or so. During all █ █
█ █ this following around Mann accidentally █ █
█ █ saves Silva's life when Silva's car is █ █
█ █ ambushed by 4-5 hitmen from a rival █ █
█ █ gang. █ █
█ █ █ █
█ █ Eventually Silva and a dozen members of █ █
█ █ his gang get brave enough to rob (get █ █
█ █ this) THE POLICE STATION in broad █ █
█ █ daylight, seize the strong boxes, and █ █
█ █ make off with a couple cop cars, giving █ █
█ █ way to your standard cop movie chase █ █
█ █ scene. Silva ends up being the only █ █
█ █ survivor and has the opportunity to kill █ █
█ █ Mann... but he doesn't because he has a █ █
█ █ sense of chivalry about the whole thing. █ █
█ █ "Now we're even" he tells Mann as he █ █
█ █ walks off with the cash. Mann isn't █ █
█ █ amused and eventually manages to capture █ █
█ █ Silva and lock him up in the stockade. █ █
█ █ However, Silva is affluent enough to █ █
█ █ have his men on the outside use an █ █
█ █ elaborate scheme to hatch him free █ █
█ █ involving planting a key on an unpopular █ █
█ █ pedophile played by Adolfo Lastretti █ █
█ █ (Rambo's Revenge, Lion of the Desert). █ █
█ █ Silva manages to escape just in time for █ █
█ █ one last big hit before he leaves the █ █
█ █ country, to murder some affluent █ █
█ █ Countess (played by the ultra-hot Ida █ █
█ █ Galli). Sure Mann has his share of █ █
█ █ informers and manages to set a trap for █ █
█ █ him, but will it work? Well I don't want █ █
█ █ to ruin the movie but I will point out █ █
█ █ quite happily that the annoying little █ █
█ █ cute kid does get shot and killed in the █ █
█ █ end. █ █
█ █ █ █
█ █ Mario Caiano isn't the most famous █ █
█ █ director of his generation nor is he the █ █
█ █ best, but he certainly knows what his █ █
█ █ audience wants. The action scenes are █ █
█ █ about as satisfying and brutal as they █ █
█ █ come. Just when you expect them to end, █ █
█ █ they just keep going and going. The best █ █
█ █ of which is the police station robbery, █ █
█ █ which has a bodycount of around 20 (most █ █
█ █ of whom are cops). Yeah that teaches em █ █
█ █ for all those speeding tickets... Caiano █ █
█ █ gives the action scenes a strange █ █
█ █ not-realistic but quite brutal edge. The █ █
█ █ best instance has to be where a █ █
█ █ drug-smuggling truck driver evades █ █
█ █ police by running a little car with a █ █
█ █ mild-mannered family of four off the █ █
█ █ road. Caiano cuts away from the ongoing █ █
█ █ chase scene to show the family of four █ █
█ █ in their car as it spirals down the █ █
█ █ cliff-side, cutting back and forth from █ █
█ █ close-up shots of the interior of the █ █
█ █ car getting bloody with screaming bodies █ █
█ █ getting tossed around and far shots █ █
█ █ showing the car getting more banged up █ █
█ █ as it tumbles along (a nod to The Big █ █
█ █ Racket I assume?). It then slams into a █ █
█ █ big rock and spectacularly explodes from █ █
█ █ 2 different camera angles. I just have █ █
█ █ to assume that Caiano really hates... █ █
█ █ people! I'm reminded of his ending of █ █
█ █ Milano Violenta in which Claudio █ █
█ █ Cassinelli burst out of a house with a █ █
█ █ trenchcoat on and machine guns in both █ █
█ █ hands and tried to kill as many cops as █ █
█ █ possible before he dies... great plan. █ █
█ █ He may not be the best director, but █ █
█ █ Caiano certainly knows how to deliver █ █
█ █ some serious, pumped-up, and █ █
█ █ mean-spirited action. █ █
█ █ █ █
█ █ Technically, the film is pretty good █ █
█ █ with some some decent urban photography █ █
█ █ by Pier Luigi Santi, using lots of █ █
█ █ amusing rotating dolly shots. Francesco █ █
█ █ De Masi (Escape From the Bronx, Thunder █ █
█ █ Warrior) lends the movie one of his █ █
█ █ less-memorable, but top-notch musical █ █
█ █ scores, which really kicks in well █ █
█ █ during the silly scene where Gennaro █ █
█ █ steals a sportscar for apparently no █ █
█ █ reason at all. The scripting by █ █
█ █ Gianfranco Clerici and Vincenzo Mannino █ █
█ █ is pretty A-Z and doesn't have too many █ █
█ █ really memorable lines. Silva is his █ █
█ █ usual slimy self though, and a lot of █ █
█ █ the ususal crime gang pop by in smaller █ █
█ █ supporting roles. Massimo Vanni (Street █ █
█ █ Law) plays one of Mann's friends, █ █
█ █ Tomasso Palladino (The Smuggler) is the █ █
█ █ leader of the gang that's out to nail █ █
█ █ Santoro, and Ottaviano Dell'Acqua (Rats) █ █
█ █ drops by as a thug who uses a piece of █ █
█ █ clothesline to decapitate a motorcyclist █ █
█ █ (with the same Gino De Rossi effect █ █
█ █ recycled in Raiders of Atlantis and █ █
█ █ Exterminators of the year 3000). What █ █
█ █ irks me is the stupid cabbie guy who █ █
█ █ tags along with Mann the whole time, who █ █
█ █ wears patented Maurizio Merli clothing, █ █
█
