Release Notes:
In this album MELECH MECHAYA reinterprets 5 traditional klezmer songs, including
the Doina from the legendary klezmer clarinetist Dave Tarras. The creative
arrangements of the band establish connections between the traditional klezmer
rhythms and the modern influences of the 21st century, with the inevitable
flavor of Fado and the Portuguese feeling.
That mixture is even more surprising in the old portuguese song "ChapΘu Preto",
where the folk "chula" rhythm is united with the klezmer vibes of the portuguese
melody.
The 7 original compositions of the album, which represent the majority of the
tracks, reveal a highly inventive sound that pushes the modern klezmer further
to new boundaries. These songs, matured both in live concerts and in studio
sessions, contain vibrant melodies and mesmerizing grooves, breathing the air
from Fado and Tango, old folk and new jazz, trip-hop and drum'n'bass, John
Zorn's Masada's work and Goran Bregovic's vibe. All this with an acoustic
formation: clarinet, violin, guitar, double bass and percussion.
The album features two special guests: in the song Gare No Oriente the unique
voice of Mφsia, she who has been taking Fado outside the box, and in the song
Caleidosc≤pio the trumpet of Frank London, the founder and leader of the Grammy
award-winning Klezmatics, the number 1 international reference in modern
klezmer.
MELECH MECHAYA is a festive trip, an infectious sound and groove that brings
together a touch of Portuguese drama and the most joyful and extrovert Jewish
tradition. They are also inspired by Gypsy, Arabian and Balkan music, along with
Fado and Tango. The band was born in 2006 in Lisbon, and has been touring
non-stop since 2007. They have performed almost 200 concerts in Portugal, Spain
and Croatia, and their shows have been classified by Joπo Bonifßcio, from
P·blico newspaper, as ôSimply electrifyingö. In 2008 they released the EP Melech
Mechaya and, in 2009, they released their debut album Budja Ba. In October 2011
they released the album Aqui Em Baixo Tudo ╔ Simples, which features the
Portuguese Fado singer Mφsia and the american trumpet player Frank London, from
the Klezmatics (Grammy award winners in 2006). The present international release
of the album, called simply ôMelech Mechayaö, also includes Danτa Do Desprazer,
a song from the album Budja Ba and one of the biggest hits of the band, as a
gift to the international audience.
