Leftroom continue a sterling run with the The Same Page EP, a three track
collaborativec project between Leftroom boss Matt Tolfrey and Chicagos Kate
Simko. Both Matt Tolfrey and Kate Simko have formidable reputations within the
modern dance music landscape. Tolfrey has become one of house musics safest
hands in recent years via an open minded attitude to DJing, on-point
stewardship of Leftroom and increasingly frequent forays into the studio while
Simko garners huge respect as one of the most forward thinking and talented
guardians of Chicagos house music legacy, and thats just one of the strings to
her bow. A true transatlantic collaboration, The Same Page was borne out of an
instant studio chemistry between Tolfrey and Simko following a Chicago-based
session just after the Detroit Movement Festival May 2011. After nine months of
stolen sessions amongst the incredibly busy duos touring schedules, Same Page
was finished in London earlier this year and the results have already given
rise to chatter about live shows and longer-term projects. Despite the all
round skill sets these two producers possess, theres a distinct breakdown in
roles across the Same Page EP. Tolfreys sense of arrangement and adroit use of
basslines meets Kates superb keyboard and drum work throughout and Chicagos
jack meets Londons moody elegance head on. From the jazz-inflected futurism of
lead cut Take it Easy, the discoid discordant funk and fluid progression of
Lazy B and subtly dubbed, melancholic creep of No Shame, The Same Page EP is
shining example of contemporary house music. With Tolfreys debut LP in progress
and Kates solo debut for Leftroom just around the corner, this is just a taster
of things to come too.
