│║ Initially I had average hope for this album, but ║ │
│║ nothing too over the top. My hopes were indeed ║ │
│║ high enough to take the initiative of pre- ║ │
│║ ordering the album and getting it signed as a ║ │
│║ consequence. When the album finally arrived at ║ │
│║ my doorstep from the UK to Florida after an ║ │
│║ extremely impatient wait, I was quite excited ║ │
│║ and began listening to it immediately. For my ║ │
│║ first listen I decided to follow along with the ║ │
│║ lyrics and also look at the illustration that ║ │
│║ accompanied each song and set the mood ║ │
│║ artistically. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Needless to say, once I listened to the ║ │
│║ masterpiece in its entirety, my expectations ║ │
│║ were blown out of the water! There are a number ║ │
│║ of characteristics that make this album a ║ │
│║ priceless gem of art. First off, the vocals, as ║ │
│║ they should be, sound amazing and emotional in ║ │
│║ every aspect. The clean production of the album ║ │
│║ gives BlazeÆs voice a crystal clear sound as if ║ │
│║ he were singing in your living room. The ║ │
│║ production is quite different in that respect ║ │
│║ when compared to previous albums. Another ║ │
│║ characteristic of this album are the lyrical ║ │
│║ themes it encompasses and how they are sung with ║ │
│║ such passion, vitality, and emotion by Blaze. ║ │
│║ Most of the album is like a concept for being ║ │
│║ who you are, living life to the fullest, and ║ │
│║ overcoming any and all challenges that present ║ │
│║ themselves to you without giving up. When we ║ │
│║ contrast this with the ôsurrounded by sadnessö ║ │
│║ atmosphere of the second half of BlazeÆs last ║ │
│║ album, we can see how he has dealt with his ║ │
│║ problems and traumatic events, such as the death ║ │
│║ of his first wife, in an inspiring and powerful ║ │
│║ manner. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The first song and title track, King of Metal, ║ │
│║ explodes in your face with double bass, fast ║ │
│║ riffs, and a simple chorus that easily makes you ║ │
│║ want to sing along. Overall, the instruments on ║ │
│║ the album are nothing more than average, yet I ║ │
│║ see them as a complement to BlazeÆs voice which ║ │
│║ is really the outstanding thing on the album. ║ │
│║ The instrumentation seems more like a vehicle in ║ │
│║ sync with BlazeÆs voice to steer you in any ║ │
│║ emotional direction he sees fit. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The next song, Dimebag, is a tribute to Dimebag ║ │
│║ Darrell and retells the events of the tragedy of ║ │
│║ his death in an epic fashion as if reminiscing ║ │
│║ around a campfire about an ancient parable where ║ │
│║ a god dies. The song gives me goosebumps the way ║ │
│║ Blaze sings it and also thinking about how this ║ │
│║ is not a mythological fable at all; it is ║ │
│║ something horrible that really occurred. RIP ║ │
│║ Dimebag. The songÆs instrumentation itself bears ║ │
│║ resemblance to an Iron Maiden-style formula ║ │
│║ where the song starts with a slow guitar intro ║ │
│║ until the ballad picks up pace with the guitars ║ │
│║ doing their part to complement the nature of the ║ │
│║ song and back to a slow outro. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The Rainbow Fades to Black is a tribute to ║ │
│║ another god, Ronnie James Dio, whose untimely ║ │
│║ passing was sad indeed. The song bursts into a ║ │
│║ chugging riff quite inspired by Black SabbathÆs ║ │
│║ song Die Young. Even the vocal melody bares ║ │
│║ resemblance to it at first, making for an ║ │
│║ interesting tribute where Blaze sings similar to ║ │
│║ Dio. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The most unexpected surprise is the song titled ║ │
│║ One More Step, which is one of the most ║ │
│║ beautiful piano compositions IÆve heard; all the ║ │
│║ while Blaze sings about overcoming the odds and ║ │
│║ fighting the darkness. This, along with Dimebag, ║ │
│║ is perhaps my favorite song on the album in a ║ │
│║ vocal and emotional context, plus I love piano ║ │
│║ pieces as well. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The song Fighter is the best heavy metal song on ║ │
│║ the album. The drums provide a chance to ║ │
│║ headbang perpetually and the guitars start off ║ │
│║ in a marching-like riff until it goes into the ║ │
│║ main riff, which is adequate until the song goes ║ │
│║ into a break and then blasts into an extreme ║ │
│║ headbanging moment similar to the title track. ║ │
│║ The guitars give off a sort of power metal-type ║ │
│║ vibe. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The song Beginning springboards from the ║ │
│║ previous melody of the song Difficult and is ║ │
│║ another beautiful compositional piece, but with ║ │
│║ an acoustic guitar this time. It gives an almost ║ │
│║ renaissance feel to the song and makes for a ║ │
│║ perfect close to the album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As IÆve stated before, the guitars, drums, and ║ │
│║ bass are all on par, yet bring nothing ║ │
│║ particularly outstanding to the table. What ║ │
│║ shines is Blaze BayleyÆs voice and how those ║ │
│║ instruments harmonize with him. Also the ║ │
│║ powerful and emotional themes of passion make ║ │
│║ for an album you can relate to on a personal ║ │
│║ level and also at the same time feel like you ║ │
│║ get to know Blaze just a little bit more as a ║ │
│║ human being. For me, this is a heavy contender ║ │
│║ for album of the year and while I know it can be ║ │
│║ surpassed instrumentally, it will be quite ║ │
│║ difficult to surpass vocally and emotionally. ║ │
│║ Perhaps the only downfall for others is that if ║ │
│║ you do not like BlazeÆs voice and style, then ║ │
│║ this album would not be for you (like the ║ │
│║ unfortunate fellow below me). In the past it did ║ │
│║ take awhile for BlazeÆs voice to grow on me, but ║ │
│║ it all started with the Iron Maiden ôVirtual XIö ║ │
│║ album and then the excellent solo releases of ║ │
│║ his career that did it for me. ║ │
