▓ If you liked the Bros. Kadane's first post-Bedhead ▓
▓ release as The New Year (2001's Newness Ends), you'll ▓
▓ like follow-up The End Is Near just fine. Present are ▓
▓ the band's loping drums, muted guitars and awake-at-4 ▓
▓ a.m. vocals, and the contrast between soft rhythms ▓
▓ and structures that turn in on themselves is more ▓
▓ pronounced. "Chinese Handcuffs" builds tension with ▓
▓ serpentine guitar lines and "Disease" is classic ▓
▓ slocore. Even when the band speeds up, as on the ▓
▓ almost Pavement-ish "Plan B," Matt Kadane's dark ▓
▓ lyrics keep the mood subdued and perfect for ▓
▓ late-night contemplation. ▓
