░░ LSDJ ░░
░░ Electric Children's World Famous "Tips and Tricks" ░░
░░ ░░
░░ NOTE: ░░
░░ Please keep in mind that many of these are either common knowledge, the ░░
░░ genius of another artist, or inspired by such. I don't claim credit for ░░
░░ founding any of these techniques, in the likely even that this is the ░░
░░ case. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ I have been having a lot of people asking me if I could enlighten them ░░
░░ with some of my LSDJ "tricks" to make my tracks sound good. To be ░░
░░ perfectly honest, there isn't a lot of trickery involved in making my ░░
░░ tracks sound amazing, so I suppose I can use this text file to explain a░░
░░ few basic ideas/skills that you can use to generally improve the sound ░░
░░ quality of an LSDJ track in general, so here goes: ░░
░░ ░░
░░ 1. vOLUME CONTROL: ░░
░░ A lot of the reason why you will here so many 1xLSDJ tracks or just LSDJ░░
░░ tracks in general sound so good is because of good volume control. This ░░
░░ is the most important thing to keep in mind in this aspect: The WAV ░░
░░ channel is difficult to maintain good volume control and still sound ░░
░░ good at the same time, and in general is quieter than the other 3 ░░
░░ channels. Because of this, it is highly recommended that you make your ░░
░░ wav channels the the main volume level of the track, and center your ░░
░░ other, more adjustable channels around them. If you make a WAV ░░
░░ instrument that sounds amazing, but is just really quiet, that's fine; ░░
░░ simply make your other PU and NOISE instruments quieter to better fit ░░
░░ your WAV instrument. Think of it this way: the only two ways anyone will░░
░░ hear your track is on a recording where you can make the overall volume ░░
░░ as loud as you want, or live through a set of huge speakers, where you ░░
░░ can make the volume as loud as you want. If you were to really dissect ░░
░░ one of ctrix's tracks for example, you'd see they are in fact, ░░
░░ ridiculously quiet. He has good instrumentation because he has good ░░
░░ volume control and is not afraid to operate at much much quieter levels.░░
░░ ░░
░░ 2. PANNING ░░
░░ Each individual instrument has the ability to be default-set to either ░░
░░ play only out of the left channel, the right channel, or both. There are░░
░░ also commands in both the table section and the CMD section of each ░░
░░ individual phrase that allow you to manual set panning on your ░░
░░ instrument. If you want your track to sound more full, DO THIS OFTEN. If░░
░░ you listen to closely to a commercially recorded track, often the drums ░░
░░ are panned all over the place, the guitars are double tracked and panned░░
░░ out, and every other instrument on the recording is panned out ░░
░░ somewhere, and only the bass, kick, snare, and basic vocals are in the ░░
░░ middle of the stereo field. Having too many centered instruments makes ░░
░░ your track sound small, narrow, and muddy. Experiment with panning and ░░
░░ try to find a medium where as many instruments (save the ones listed ░░
░░ above that should be centered) are panned out as possible without ░░
░░ compromising the overall quality of the track. On that note... ░░
░░ ░░
░░ ░░
░░ HOW TO MAKE A STEREO-SEPARATED SNARE/INSTRUMENT: ░░
░░ If you ever hear short instruments or percussion in LSDJ tracks that ░░
░░ happens to sound like its playing on both sides of the stereo field, ░░
░░ here's what they're doing. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ 1) set an automation table on your instrument. This can be done ░░
░░ permanently in the instrument edit screen so the instrument does this ░░
░░ all the time, or you can set separate commands in your phrase table. ░░
░░ 2) in your automation table set your first 3 commands to be panning ░░
░░ commands (the "o" command) ░░
░░ 3) set the first one to pan right, ░░
░░ the second left, and the 3rd middle. ░░
░░ 4) set a kill command on the last step of the table. This will cutoff ░░
░░ your instrument, but for shorter instruments this shouldnt matter anyway░░
░░ ░░
░░ The result is an instrument that pans so fast at the beginning of its ░░
░░ envelope that it sounds as if it is playing on both sides of the stereo ░░
░░ field. Use this on snares to create a sort of chorused clap and mono ░░
░░ snare combo effect. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ MAKING PRETTIER CHORDS ░░
░░ 2 things about chords: ░░
░░ 1) When using the C command on an instrument, try editing the number of ░░
░░ the left hand set of parameters (for instance, C37 instead of C07) you ░░
░░ can create much prettier chords using this technique, because each left ░░
░░ hand parameter sets the harmonization in a different scale, so you can ░░
░░ choose the one that works best with your songs scale. ░░
░░ 2) instead of all chords all the time, try using a table and adjusting ░░
░░ the parameters in the TSP column. this will quickly transpose your note ░░
░░ up or down however many steps you set, and with an H command following ░░
░░ your TSP parameters, cause the instrument to ver quickly repeat the ░░
░░ adjustments you put on it, creating the arpeggio effect you may be ░░
░░ familiar with in old Random LSDJ tracks. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ MAKING PUNCHIER SNARES: ░░
░░ When making your snare, set an automation table on it in the instrument ░░
░░ screen. from there, set it's first TSP column parameter to something ░░
░░ deep like FC, then follow up with something like 01 or 02. Assuming you ░░
░░ put a K or H command to stop the table from repeating, you can create ░░
░░ the effect of the snare starting for a split second with a low bassy ░░
░░ noise tone and then snapping up to something higher and sharper, ░░
░░ mimicing the sound of a 909 snare almost. From there, mess with its ░░
░░ envelope and length settings to get the sound just right. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ HOW DO I SIDECHAINED? ░░
░░ Now this next trick comes with a word of caution: my method works ░░
░░ specifically because I use two gameboys, and my rhythm section is in ░░
░░ another gameboy from my leads. Pulling this off with just one DMG is ░░
░░ much harder. Also, I reiterate, I did NOT make this up. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ Simply set an automation table on an instrument that plays every 4 steps░░
░░ of your song, and on that table set up something to the effect of this: ░░
░░ ░░
░░ stp vol tsp cmd cmd ░░
░░ 0 00 00 M11 00 ░░
░░ 1 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ 2 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ 3 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ 4 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ 5 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ 6 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ 7 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ 8 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ 9 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ A 00 00 M44 00 ░░
░░ B 00 00 M55 00 ░░
░░ C 00 00 M66 00 ░░
░░ D 00 00 M77 00 ░░
░░ E 00 00 000 00 ░░
░░ F 00 00 H0E 00 ░░
░░ ░░
░░ This creates an admittedly sharp sidechaining effect, but messing with ░░
░░ the parameters of the M commands here can give you as smooth of a ░░
░░ sidechain as you want. Keep in mind mine works the way it does because ░░
░░ my drums and bass are in a different gameboy that isnt effected by this ░░
░░ table. It is possible to make this work with 1xDMG though, it's just ░░
░░ very difficult. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ ECHO ░░
░░ The last major trick I can think of to improve your LSDJ tracks is the ░░
░░ use of manually crafted echo. There's 2 ways to do this: 1 channel and 2░░
░░ channel echo. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ 1CHANNELECHO: ░░
░░ The trick here is to track out the melody you want to create, but in the░░
░░ gaps of the phrase where you don't have notes, assign a note thats the ░░
░░ same note as not the immediately previous note, but the one before that ░░
░░ on an instrument with a slightly different tone and quieter. This will ░░
░░ create the effect that a the previously played note is still trailing ░░
░░ off in the background after new notes are played, which will sound like ░░
░░ echo in the single channel. This works best in pulse channels, as you ░░
░░ can simply assign the echoing instrument as a pulse wave with a shorter ░░
░░ length (EG echo 25% waves with a 12% and 50% with a 25%) ░░
░░ ░░
░░ 2CHANNEL ECHO: ░░
░░ If you wish to really get powerful with your echo, you may want to ░░
░░ consider echoing the melody across 2 channels. This is a little more ░░
░░ tricky, but if pulled off right, gives you melody much more freedom and ░░
░░ power in terms of length of notes and rhythm. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ To make 2 channel echo, create your initial melody, go into another ░░
░░ channel, copy and paste the original patterns. clone them into new ░░
░░ patterns, select the entire phrase and move everything down about 3 or 4░░
░░ steps depending on tempo, then change the instrument to something ░░
░░ quieter with a different tone (or the same maybe), and for a little ░░
░░ extra oomph, take any enveloping off the instruments (for instance, make░░
░░ every echo'd note an x0 or x8 envelope), and pan them alternating left ░░
░░ and right. This will create a sort of "ping pong" echo effect that can ░░
░░ really fill out a melody and make it shine in an otherwise flat track. ░░
░░ If you do this across 2 pulse channels, be very careful of overlapping ░░
░░ notes, however. 2 notes played at the same time, even with different ░░
░░ volumes or waveforms, tend to create an ugly "squeezing" effect on the ░░
░░ notes in the pulse channels, very akin to overly-emphasized flanging. if░░
░░ necessary, change notes in the same places to notes that harmonize ░░
░░ instead. This usually won't compromise the quality of the echo. ░░
░░ PREPARING SAMPLE KITS
I have gotten a lot of requests on how to do this.░░
░░ I usually don't like answering because it's hard to explain but hey this░░
░░ is special so I'll give it a shot. The first thing you need to do is ░░
░░ download a program called LSDPatcher. Mine is version 6.0 I don't know ░░
░░ if there's a newer one. Once you have that (you might need java runtime ░░
░░ or whatever to make it work) You can open up a ROM file (not a save ░░
░░ file, make sure you have transferred your .gb file from your cartridge) ░░
░░ and begin sample transferring.
Some preliminary things:
-Your samples ░░
░░ need to be in WAV format. If once you are done loading them they sound ░░
░░ high pitched and double time you need to reduce the sample rate. They ░░
░░ should be 16 bit wavs and 44100 hz.
-Entire sample kits can have up to ░░
░░ like 16 different samples (i think), but can hold only a total of 2.5 ░░
░░ seconds of audio, so budget your kits well.
So once you have made your ░░
░░ samples (or found them or recorded them or whatever you did to make your░░
░░ tiny wavs) you simply load your .gb file in lsdpatcher and select an ░░
░░ empty kit and select "add sample" in the right sidebar. Then select the ░░
░░ samples you want (be mindful of the size limit for the kit! If the codes░░
░░ at the bottom turn red, you've got too much and need to continue in ░░
░░ another kit), name your kit, and click "compile" to make it official. ░░
░░ Rinse and repeat as desired, then save your ROM image and load it back ░░
░░ onto your cart. Viola! ░░
░░ ░░
░░ ░░
░░ Other than this, a lot of what can make a track sound good is good ░░
░░ mastering, and of course, good composition in the first place. these ░░
░░ tricks work best if you already have a banger on your hands and simply ░░
░░ want to make it stand out. Keep working and you'll be an LSDJ master in ░░
░░ no time! ░░
