│║ With æUnder This FlagÆ Italian power metallers ║ │
│║ White Skull release their ninth long player in ║ │
│║ their twenty-four year career! During the years ║ │
│║ the band has had to deal with many changes in ║ │
│║ the line-up, and also on vocal matters. Although ║ │
│║ vocalists Gustavo Gabarro and Elisa De Palma ║ │
│║ were good vocalists in their own ways, the band ║ │
│║ never made as much impression as they used to ║ │
│║ with original singer Frederica de Boni, who can ║ │
│║ be heard on the First four records. Well then, ║ │
│║ after partying ways with Elis (who did the ║ │
│║ vocals for the last album, ÆForever FightÆ), fem ║ │
│║ fatale Frederica is back where she belongs. This ║ │
│║ fact alone makes the album already interesting, ║ │
│║ even without having heard a single note. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Already with the opening track it is clear that ║ │
│║ they have more or less followed up the same path ║ │
│║ as they did on the last album musically, and the ║ │
│║ melodic and somewhat epic sound has been ║ │
│║ continued. With Federica on vocals the band ║ │
│║ again sounds very trusted and, with all due ║ │
│║ respect towards Elisa, it is clear that itÆs ║ │
│║ Federica who is the right person for White ║ │
│║ Skull. The total picture therefore sounds ║ │
│║ stronger and the album has also turned out more ║ │
│║ versatile. On top of that the band has also gone ║ │
│║ back a bit to my favourite albums, ÆTales From ║ │
│║ The NorthÆ and ÆPublic Glory, Secret AgonyÆ. And ║ │
│║ so alongside the epic mid-tempo songs and ║ │
│║ slower, more sensitive track on which the ║ │
│║ acoustic pieces play a bigger part, we get ║ │
│║ sturdier, faster power metal tracks in the way ║ │
│║ the band used guarantee in especially in the ║ │
│║ past. Listen for example to tracks like ║ │
│║ æPrisoners Of WarÆ, æFreedomÆ Not FreeÆ, æYou ║ │
│║ ChooseÆ of æRedemptionÆ. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I must say that apart from the faster songs I ║ │
│║ had some difficulty getting into the album at ║ │
│║ First, and needed several listening turns in ║ │
│║ order to get the feel. But with every listening ║ │
│║ turn I learned to appreciate the album more and ║ │
│║ more. And so it becomes more and more clear that ║ │
│║ there is not a single track on the album that is ║ │
│║ weak. Listen for example to the dragging power ║ │
│║ metal smasher æRed DevilÆ and its wonderful ║ │
│║ chorus, the beautiful and dreamy æA.O.D.Æ and ║ │
│║ æWar After WarÆ or the pounding rock character ║ │
│║ all tracks characterize. The songs individually ║ │
│║ contain lots of variety and so despite its total ║ │
│║ playing time of an album the album doesnÆt ║ │
│║ collapse or bore for a moment. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ And finally the albumÆs production has also ║ │
│║ turned out stronger than the two predecessors. ║ │
│║ The guitars have delightfully heavy sound with a ║ │
│║ sharp edge, by which both the fast riffs, and ║ │
│║ the more rocking pieces, as well as the solos ║ │
│║ completely come to their own without too licked. ║ │
│║ The drum sound is also clear and heavy without ║ │
│║ sounding too digital and finally there has been ║ │
│║ much more room for the vocals. Altogether this ║ │
│║ is definitely one of the bandÆs strongest albums ║ │
│║ so far. Ok, they havenÆt managed to match-up to ║ │
│║ æTales From The NorthÆ, but that is no reason to ║ │
│║ be mournful. æUnder This FlagÆ is simply a ║ │
│║ highly strong album that will definitely apply ║ │
│║ to the fans of melodic power metal. ║ │
