│║ Elias Viljanen is the guitarist of Sonata ║ │
│║ Arctica and he had enough time on his hand to ║ │
│║ record and release his third solo CD. When he ║ │
│║ plays his solo material this Finn calls himself ║ │
│║ E.Vil. It is a little childish but I will ║ │
│║ forgive him for his music is not childish at ║ │
│║ all, but dead serious. More than serious even. ║ │
│║ Using a number of experienced musicians ║ │
│║ (ApocalypticaÆs Mikko Siren on drums and ║ │
│║ EvergreyÆs Jari Kainulainen on bass) he has ║ │
│║ released a beautiful CD. Fortunately, no CD full ║ │
│║ with shredding and technical freakness, but a CD ║ │
│║ with songs, melodies and of course cool and ║ │
│║ heavy riffs. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ There are two songs with vocals on the album. ║ │
│║ His friend from Sonata Arctica Tony Kakko sings ║ │
│║ on the great track æKiss Of Rain' that very ║ │
│║ strongly resembles Sonata Arctica (although ║ │
│║ there is no song on the latest SA album with ║ │
│║ such a great riff). The great hard rock track ║ │
│║ æLast Breath Of LoveÆ is sung by NightwishÆs ║ │
│║ Marco Hietala who has actually never convinced ║ │
│║ me as a singer. That means that there are ten ║ │
│║ instrumental tracks. No worries! As noted, you ║ │
│║ do not have to listen to freak guitar playing ║ │
│║ that only guitar nerds can digest. Viljanen is ║ │
│║ not a shredder (although he can shred!) but ║ │
│║ should be placed in a category with for example ║ │
│║ a (relaxed) Paul Gilbert. He likes to create all ║ │
│║ kinds of (funny) sounds with his Ibanez and ║ │
│║ therefore he reminds me of Edward Van Halen. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Some noteworthy songs are æCruel GrooveÆ (built ║ │
│║ around a heavy riff), the delicious uptempo song ║ │
│║ æUp To SpeedÆ (in which the chords sound a bit ║ │
│║ like Edward Van HalenÆs). The acoustic guitar ║ │
│║ comes out in the relaxing æMy Guiding LightÆ. My ║ │
│║ two favourite songs are the guitar ballads æOne ║ │
│║ TonightÆ and ÆBeautiful PieceÆ where Elias shows ║ │
│║ his sensitive side. So you hear more from his ║ │
│║ heart than from his fingertips. In a time where ║ │
│║ loads of shredders release albums, this album is ║ │
│║ a blessing! ║ │
