Urs Leimgruber
Leimgruber, Urs (b. 1952, Lucerne). Swiss composer, now
resident in France, of chamber works that have been heard
throughout Europe; he is also active as a saxophonist.
Mr. Leimgruber is self-taught as a composer.
Among his honors are the Anerkennungspreis from the city of
Lucerne (1977), fellowships from the Dienemann Kulturstiftung
(1988, Lucerne) and the cultural department of the canton and
city of Lucerne (1994) and an award for his entire oeuvre from
the Aargauer Kuratorium (1999). He has received commissions
from the Kulturstiftung Pro Helvetia and the Kunstverein
Heidelberg.
In the 1970s, he co-founded the electric jazz/free music
ensemble OM. Since then, he has been active as an improviser
and has collaborated with Jacques Demierre, Michel Doneda, Fred
Frith, Fritz Hauser, Joelle Leandre, Gunter Muller, Lauren
Newton, Barre Phillips, and Keith Rowe.
He has composed much music for the saxophone, including several
commissioned works for the ARTE Saxophone Quartet, and he has
also done projects with the wind quintet of the Berliner
Philharmoniker and Ensemble Bleu. In addition, he has
collaborated with Maria de Alvear, Elena Andreyev, Tim Berne,
Jaap Blonk, Jerome Bourdellon, Bobby Burri, John Butcher,
Leonzio Cherubini, Gunter Christmann, Jim Denley, Christy
Doran, Tadashi Endo, Walter Fahndrich, and Pierre Favre.
Other collaborators include Rico Gubler, Edu Haubensak, Fred
van Hove, Felix-Philipp Ingold, Garth Knox, Hans M. Koch,
Francoise Kubler, Fine Kwiatkowski, Steve Lacy, Joe McPhee,
Mela Meierhans, Klaus Merz, Phil Minton, Ernesto Molinari,
Sunny Murray, and Pauline Oliveros. Lastly, he has worked with
Terry Riley, Elke Schipper, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Martin
Schutz, Louis Sclavis, Bettina Skrzypczak, Harry Sparnaay,
Fredy Studer, Mark Tompkins, Saadet Turkos, Roger Turner, Rolf
Winnewisser, and Otomo Yoshihide.
He has lived in Paris since 1988.
Fritz Hauser
Born 1953 in Basel, Switzerland, Fritz Hauser has developed his
sound language in the most varied ways.
In solo concerts, in different small and large groups, in
multi-media projects (theatre / dance / film / radio /
architecture), and with numerous recordings, he has contributed
to the development of the drumset from a mere timekeeper to an
instrument.
His concert tours have taken him through Europe, to Canada, the
USA, the Middle East, to China, to the Baltic States, Russia,
Kirgistan, Japan and Australia.
Fritz Hauser has commissioned and performed works from
different composers. Among these numerous works for drumset
solo ( a.o. by John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, Rob Kloet, Bun
Ching Lam, Joey Baron, Stephan Grieder, Pierre Favre, mani
Planzer, Robert Suter, Warren Smith, Franz Koglmann, Art
Clay...)
In the area of improvised music he has collaborated with a
whole list of musicians. Urs Leimgruber, Joelle Leandre,
Marilyn Crispell, Christy Doran, Lauren Newton...
In the field of percussion music he regularly performs with the
quartet <Four in Time> (Pierre Favre, Fritz Hauser, Daniel
Humair, Fredy Studer) and since the Stockholm International
Percussion Event 1998 he collaborates with various percussion
soloists and - ensembles all over the world: Kroumata, Steven
Schick, Keiko Abe, Synergy Percussion, Amsterdam Percussion
Group, Nexus, Jean Geoffroy...
Mr. Hauser is simply one of the best drummers alive; when he's
finished with one of his improvised concerts, you leave with a
new understanding of his drums' anatomy, their exact range of
sound. You don't miss the rest of the rhythm section, and you
learn that when a musician possesses such extraordinary touch
and a sensitivity to pulse, "abstract" never means "haphazard".
