Hmm, a cult figure making an album of another cult figureÆs songs? ItÆs not
common, but this one works very well. Todd Snider is a skilled maverick whose
first idol was Jerry Jeff Walker, the 1970s cosmic cowboy who scored a hit with
ôMr. Bojangles.ö Snider saw Walker perform once in Austin and that was the
turning point of his life. He persuaded producer Don Was to oversee this
ragged-but-right disc of Walker tunes limned with a fresh energy. ItÆs intensely
devotional, but intensely satisfying. Snider captures WalkerÆs boozy hedonism in
the Tex-Mex ôSangria Wineö and boogie-woogie-laced ôVince Triple O Martin,ö but
also WalkerÆs sensitivity with a love song, as in the mandolin-sweetened ôDerby
Day.ö Snider is joined by Elizabeth Cook and Kix Brooks (of Brooks & Dunn) on
harmonies. The highlight is ôRailroad Lady,ö which Walker wrote with Jimmy
Buffett. Oh, and a transcendent ôMr. Bojanglesö is here, too.
