ªª▓ Founded by Michael Laird in New York City in 1997, Unto Ashes have released six successful ▓ªª
ªª▓ albums on Projekt. Unto Ashes have performed widely in the United States, and in Europe the ▓ªª
ªª▓ band has played 27 shows: headlining at the Wave Gotik Treffen's Schauspielhaus (2003 & ▓ªª
ªª▓ 2012), touring with Elane (8 dates, 2005) and a much acclaimed tour with darkwave gods QNTAL ▓ªª
ªª▓ (17 dates, 2006). ▓ªª

ªª▓ The eclectic instrumentation and musical compositions draw upon wildly diverse influences: ▓ªª
ªª▓ Medieval music, long-forgotten poets, 70s progressive rock, heavy metal, synth-pop, Arabic ▓ªª
ªª▓ music and modern classical composers. These disparate sources are here seamlessly united ▓ªª
ªª▓ (and seemingly without effort) under the hypnotic gaze of the mysterious figure that appears ▓ªª
ªª▓ on the album cover. This quixotic effigy signals Burials Foretold as a passionate, intense, ▓ªª

ªª▓ Burials Foretold is graced by the unsurpassed vocal harmonies of Hagle, Laird and Lincoln, ▓ªª
ªª▓ last heard together on Unto Ashes' Empty Into White (Projekt 2003). The present album was ▓ªª
ªª▓ performed on an unusually broad array of original Medieval and Renaissance instruments ▓ªª
ªª▓ including viola da gamba, hurdy-gurdy, harmonium, dulcimer, bagpipes, French horn and cello, ▓ªª
ªª▓ interwoven by acoustic guitar, bells, piano and much more. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Burials Foretold opens with an instrumental dirge of the same name, a Renaissance funeral ▓ªª
ªª▓ procession performed on viola da gamba and guitar. This introductory piece, which is ▓ªª
ªª▓ suggestive of a "lost" composition by Henry Purcell (1659-1695), foreshadows the penultimate ▓ªª
ªª▓ track on the album, namely the eerie "Too Late to Begin." "Pilzentanz," a neo-Medieval dance ▓ªª
ªª▓ performed on bagpipe and hurdy-gurdy, follows with choral vocals (in Latin) taken from the ▓ªª
ªª▓ so-called "Apocalypse of Golias." This inscrutable 12th-century dream poem exalts classical ▓ªª
ªª▓ Pagan writers (such as Pythagoras) while ridiculing the immorality and corruption of the ▓ªª
ªª▓ Christian clergy. With wanton abandon, "Pilzentanz" seems to celebrate the enduring ▓ªª
ªª▓ revolutionary chant: "We shall celebrate, with such fierce dancing, the death of your ▓ªª
ªª▓ Institutions!" ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ One of the most luminous tracks on Burials Foretold is the exquisite "She Binds Away the ▓ªª
ªª▓ Night," written as a Pagan prayer that seeks to evoke ancient rites, and does so brilliantly ▓ªª
ªª▓ with hypnotic stringed instruments, regal French horns and sublime choral vocals. "Night is ▓ªª
ªª▓ Coming Soon" and "Piper's Song" are startlingly sinister but beautifully rendered little ▓ªª
ªª▓ murder ballads; their sickly sweet sounds seem to emanate from the pages of a 19th-century ▓ªª
ªª▓ edition of the Brothers Grimm, or some long-lost manuscript by Christina Rossetti. In fact, ▓ªª
ªª▓ the lyrics of all three songs were written by K. McClain especially for "Burials Foretold," ▓ªª
ªª▓ as was "Young Men Leave for Battles Unknown," a stirring war hymn which resembles a ▓ªª
ªª▓ traditional British Isles lament. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Unto Ashes continue to write inspired music that incorporates poems by now-obscure authors. ▓ªª
ªª▓ On Burials Foretold we find a morbid poem by American satirist Ambrose Bierce ("Worms'- ▓ªª
ªª▓ Meat") and an enchanted fairy poem by Cicely Mary Barker ("Spring Magic"). The instrumental ▓ªª
ªª▓ songs are no less compelling: Natalia Lincoln has contributed an incandescent and ▓ªª
ªª▓ characteristically stirring piano composition ("Rubine") which is soon followed by a ▓ªª
ªª▓ shimmering waltz performed on original Renaissance instruments ("Ascent + Descent"). ▓ªª

ªª▓ Two original compositions by Laird ("I Remember Happiness" and "Too Late to Begin") are ▓ªª
