Rashied Ali - drums
Cyro Baptista - percussion, wooden flute
Guilherme Franco - percussion, wooden flute
Ivo Perelman - tenor saxophone, recorder, piano
Matthew Shipp - piano
By now, Perelman has established himself as a wickedly majestic
torch thrower, with a melodic bent, in the tradition of Albert
Ayler. Whether or not Perelman developed his sound independent
of Ayler misses the point, which is that Perelman is one of the
few saxophonists with the sound and stamina to sit in Ayler's
shoes. This recording is bifurcated between pieces left over
from Perelman's excellent pairing with pianist Matt Shipp on
"Bendito of Santa Cruz," and the remainder a set with
percussionists Rashied Ali, Guilherme Franco, and Cyto
Baptista. The best tracks tend to be the ones with Shipp, with
whom the saxophonist seems to share a natural affinity.
Perelman proves himsel fan interesting pianist on a couple of
pieces, though we only hear a glimpse of his potential. The
saxophonist's takes of "Desafinada" and "Summer Samba" are
characteristically triumphant and exultant.
