█ █ Okay, I donÆt like this album one bit, so here goes. IÆll █ █
█ █ try to put on my objective goggles and give you an honest █ █
█ █ view on Taming The Cannibals. Frankly I never heard of █ █
█ █ Ehnahre (Boston, Massachusetts) before I received the promo █ █
█ █ from Crucial Blast, or before I read the great interview █ █
█ █ with Ehnahre on doommantia.com by Aleks Evdokimov. My █ █
█ █ girlfriend wonÆt have anymore Ehnahre on the home stereo █ █
█ █ set, so IÆm sitting here with headphones on my mac. In the █ █
█ █ best of æmetalÆ traditions the logo is pretty much █ █
█ █ unreadable, and the music is quite un-listenable so thereÆs █ █
█ █ a poetic match. Remember when you first got into The █ █
█ █ Dillinger Escape Plan? It was nice for two, maybe three █ █
█ █ albums but by the fourth album you got the impression that █ █
█ █ this was sick, pretty much freaky music (sick and freaky in █ █
█ █ the æbadÆ way). Well, for me personally thatÆs basically █ █
█ █ the whole story with Ehnahre: death metallic and visceral █ █
█ █ brutal but thereÆs nothing æthereÆ for me as a listener or █ █
█ █ reader. ThereÆs no spark, just irritation & █ █
█ █ misunderstanding. I donÆt know exactly where to begin, I █ █
█ █ can give you a checklist? Vocals? Horrible. Riffs? Nerve █ █
█ █ wrecking. Lyrics? I canÆt hear what heÆs singing so IÆll █ █
█ █ check the lyrics sheet for you. Okay: █ █
█ █ ôThat corpse wasnÆt planted in clover; █ █
█ █ Ah, nothing of her was found █ █

█ █ aware that IÆm gunning off this album, and I donÆt like █ █
█ █ that IÆm doing it because every band deserves a fair █ █
█ █ review, so IÆll look for something positive instead, all █ █
█ █ right? Maybe I donÆt get æitÆ and I have to delve deeper, █ █
█ █ conceptually into the music. █ █
█ █ Put positively (but arguably negatively) the band seems to █ █
█ █ experiment for experimentÆs sake. Nothing wrong with that, █ █
█ █ but you have to be in the right kind of mood or even in the █ █
█ █ right kind of music to enjoy an experiment like this. Yes █ █
█ █ people, my last fmÆs top five this week reads something █ █
█ █ like this: Warpaint, Bryan Ferry, Nico, Brian Eno, Band Of █ █
█ █ Horses so IÆm a sucker for melody and delicacy. But beware, █ █
█ █ my top ten reads like this: add to the five above, Electric █ █
█ █ Wizard, Monster Magnet, Twin Shadow (yep, Twin Shadow █ █
█ █ sucks), Elfer, and last but not least Brian Eno & Harold █ █
█ █ Budd. Reviewing this album, this is the fifth time that █ █
█ █ Birth comes by, the last and sixth song on Taming The █ █
█ █ Cannibals. IÆm still not sure what to tell you, because I █ █
█ █ still canÆt find anything memorable to write about. But █ █
█ █ letÆs get back to the conceptual thing. In the interview, █ █
█ █ EhnahreÆs sound is called Avant-Black-Death and Doom, but █ █
█ █ IÆm not sure where the doom is. I just checked their █ █
█ █ myspace, and the top-something of a bandÆs friends on █ █
█ █ myspace usually gives you an impression of the musical █ █
█ █ direction the band likes to situate itself in. In their top █ █
█ █ eight: Raw Radar War (yes, you can read that backward and █ █
█ █ it still reads the same), Corrupted, Gnaw Their Tongues & █ █
█ █ Starkweather. Not for the faint of heart! █ █
█ █ Ehnahre consists of Ryan McGuire, John Carchia & Ricardo █ █
█ █ Donoso. Former members of "Kayo Dot" and "Biolich" (never █ █
█ █ heard of them), Aleks states that possibly depression and █ █
█ █ poetry are the lyrical themes of their songs. According to █ █
█ █ Ryan this is ôclose to the truth. Depression is definitely █ █
█ █ a common theme, and poetry is important because we don't █ █
█ █ actually write any of our own lyrics. We use poetry as our █ █
█ █ texts, because I believe to make the music as good as we █ █
█ █ possibly can, to take it to the greatest heights, we █ █
█ █ utilize the best we can of each aspect. Not being a poet █ █
█ █ myself, why should I ruin the music with my shitty lyrics, █ █
█ █ when there are excellent poets who can assist me in the █ █
█ █ artistic endeavor.ö I didnÆt know that! (The lyrics I █ █
█ █ mean). Asked about their music, Ryan describes their music █ █
█ █ as avant-garde death/doom metal. Well. He (Ryan) further █ █
█ █ describes EhnahreÆs sound as ôvery detailed and complex and █ █
█ █ extremely difficult and academic. But those things are used █ █
█ █ to create furious, dark, ugly music. I like to call it a █ █
█ █ "calculated insanity".ö ThatÆs something I donÆt like: why █ █
█ █ not go for insanity? ThereÆs something cheesy about such a █ █
█ █ dualism, it comes across as too forced. Try Burzum for █ █
█ █ once, thatÆs not calculated, but still insane (and very, █ █
█ █ very good). In my opinion, the music is weird for weirdÆs █ █
█ █ sake: I, on the contrary, like organic, spontaneous music █ █
█ █ that sets its limits by inspiration and not by how much █ █
█ █ academic thinking went into the whole process. █ █
