* Contemporary Mastering

Mastering is often thought of as little more than a final gloss of EQ,
compression and limiting, but there are plenty of tasks beyond these that
are required of the modern mastering engineer. Mike Hillier explores the
world of today's mastering.

* Recording in the Studio - Part 2

Having made all necessary decisions and set up your band for recording,
it's time to see how you can maximise your time after the engineer hits the
red button. Hollin Jones explains.

* Studio Icons: Altec 436

Despite being eclipsed by the Fairchild, the Altec 436 left its own
indelible mark on popular music and recording. John Pickford has the story.

* Ten Minute Master

The History of the Synthesizer - Part 2

It's almost 50 years since Robert Moog popularised the synthesizer. Russ
Hepworth-Sawyer charts its progress through the decades.

* Landmark Productions

You Really Got Me, Creating a hit single isn't all about coming up with a
great hook or riff - it can also involve downright vandalism

* 25 Tips For Kick-starting Composition

Initial ideas that spark the songwriting process must inspire you enough to
see it through to completion. Liam O'Mullane explains how he gets the fire
going.

* Groove Arrangement & Programming

Drums patterns vary greatly from one genre to another, but many of the
tools used to create them are universal. We take you from from ideas to
full arrangements.

Digital Bass (984MB)

As we're massive fans of warm, analogue bass sounds, we occasionally forget
that digital synths can be equally capable of making earth-shattering bass
tones. To prove this point, the experts at PinkNoise Studio have risen to
the challenge and programmed 15 multisampled bass sounds using an array of
digital hardware synths. You'll find punchy, electro slap bass sounds from
the Yamaha DX-7, tight and squelchy hits from the Waldorf Microwave XT,
resonant sweeps from the Nord Lead 2, and some distorted squeals from the
Korg Triton. The sounds are presented as high-quality 24/44.1 and super
-high-quality 24/96 audio, with additional patches for both Reason's NN-XT
sampler and NI's Kontakt.

RnB & Pop Construction Kits (296MB)

Pop and RnB production styles can vary massively from track to track, but
often feature tight drum sounds with a number of layered instruments and
parts to create a larger, fuller sound. This month's pack from Equinox
Sounds features six construction kits for writing RnB, soul, pop and hip
hop tracks, with a range of electronic and live-sounding beats, soulful
keys and organ parts, deep bass patterns and smooth synths lines. All of
the parts are provided in WAV and Apple Loops formats and the kits go from
75-111BPM.

Prime Loops: Piano Ballads, Vox & More (152MB)

Prime Loops has once again compiled a range of top samples and loops taken
from their latest releases. To accompany the review in this month's Mini
Reviews you'll find some beautifully played piano ballads on classical
piano and organ. There are also some big shout-outs from Rasta Vocal
Samples 3, processed effects in Epic Build-Ups & Breakdowns 2, upfront
synths and beats in R&B Dance Anthems 3, plus rump-shaking house beats in
Tropical ShakeUp. Finally, there are raw-sounding drum loops and
aggressive bass sounds taken from Ultimate Dubstep Drummer and UK Bass
Anthems.

Logic Pro Production Tips (336MB)

Point Blank Online offer a range of four-week, internet-based courses
covering production techniques in different dance music genres and focusing
on Logic and Ableton Live. We've got two excellent videos exploring Logic
production tricks including gating and sidechain reverb. There are also two
in-depth videos focusing on drum EQ techniques, the second of which looks
at balancing your kick and bass parts using the channel EQ and Linear Phase
EQ. It's presented by Ian Sherwin, who has worked with Primal Scream,
Stereophonics and La Roux to name but a few.
