For Van Zandt fans that may be unaware, Kelly, Von
Till & Weinrich are foundational personalities in
the American underground metal scene, and their
myriad projects have shaped the more interesting
courses of heavy music over the past 30 years or
so. The match-up with Van Zandt's songs makes
sense. In many ways these guys have the same
relationship to their scene that Townes had to
his. As writers, musicians and innovators they are
often acknowledged as holding their own with the
best in their genre. And yet, like Townes, they
have a mystical air about them that makes them
much more interesting than their contemporaries,
yet seems to keep contemporary mass appeal at bay.
They are akin to Townes in that their music and
themes are often droned out, dark & brooding,
seeming simultaneously psychedelic and on the nod.
Van Zandt's country-folk and Kelly/Von
Till/Weinrich's drone-post-doom-whatever-metal are
bound by strains of the Anglo-Germanic esoteric
subconscious: hypnotic, spiraling meditations on
death, wandering, & emphasis on sensory
experience.
Musically, the covers are basically
straightforward solo acoustic performances. Kelly
and Von Till's tracks are accompanied in places by
very sparse percussion and electronics that will
not be unfamiliar to Neurosis fans, though its
presence is exceedingly minimal. Wino's tracks
seem to be strictly acoustic guitar & vocals, and
in my opinion are the strongest tracks on the
record. I would have been happy with a full length
release of Wino doing Townes covers alone. Anyway,
as you can tell from the samples and from my
descriptions, there are no full blown electric
drone Shrinebuilder-style takes on Van Zandt's
song, as some of us were expecting. That certainly
would have been interesting to hear. However,
tracks present are an excellent, respectful
tribute to Van Zandt's songwriting. I think these
tracks would be of great appeal to TVZ fans, and
frankly are better than any of the many other TVZ
cover recordings out there (save perhaps the
bootlegs of Dax Riggs).
