A co-release between two of Europe's most talked-about
indie labels, UK's Dufflecoat and Sweden's Luxury, this
very limited 7-inch vinyl is a split release between UK
West Midlands outfit The Proctors and Richmond, California
sybling duo Apple Orchard. Set to drop their new album on
Shelflife in 2012, The Proctors here contribute with "Fun
Sunday" and Adrienne", while Apple Proctors here make their
first release in two years with "Not This Time" and "The
Early Riser". Exclusive music, and clearly up-to-date indie
pop, join the hunt for a copy of this record today while
supplies last.
---
THE PROCTORS were formed by Gavin Priest in 1993 following
the demise of The Cudgels in which Gavin had been lead
guitarist. The original line-up also featured Gavin's
sister Christina on vocals and ex-Cudgels Adrian Josef
Jones and Stephen Davies. The group recorded a well
received demo tape which led to US based Sunday Records
offering to release a 7-inch single by the band. "The Baby
Blue EP" was released in 1993. Around this time Stephen
took some time out, and the band settled down as a three
piece. In 1994 the "Moon Song" 7-inch was released and
various appearances were made on Sunday Records
compilations over the next three years until in 1996 the
album "Pinstripes and Englishmen" was released. Again the
record sold well and the band had begun to attract a small
but loyal following, even though they had never played a
live show. In 1997, Gavin's involvement with other musical
projects left little time to concentrate on The Proctors
and the group decided to take a break. Following the
release on Cloudberry Records in 2009 of an EP of
unreleased songs, The Proctors released a 7-inch vinyl
single on Shelflife Records featuring new tunes "All The
Books" and "Morning Light". The present line up of Gavin
Priest, Adrian Jones, Margaret Calleja and Thomas Aherne
are busy working on material for their forthcoming album to
be released on Shelflife later in 2012.
APPLE ORCHARD are an indie pop duo, comprised of brothers
Ryan and Dale Marquez, whose wispy, shambling tunes, rooted
in bands like the Pastels and the Sugargliders, give a nod
to acts like the Bridal Shop and Cats on Fire. The Marquez
brothers recorded a track, "Wide Awake", under the name The
Apple Orchard (the name is derived from a song by Bouquet)
in 2000; when the track made its way onto a Filipino
compilation disc, "Mutual Admiration Society", the duo
decided to keep going with the fledgling indie pop project.
The duo proved to be rather prolific - having taken a few
years to generate material, The Apple Orchard saw a flurry
of compilation disc appearances (Dashboard Teddy, Vol. 1,
via Dorothy Records; We Are Not Alone, Vol. 6, via Best
Kept Secret; Stamp Collecting (For Beginners), via Secret
Crush Records) and cassette tape releases (Last Wednesday,
via Popgun Recordings; Paris Was a Daydream, via Best Kept
Secret) in 2003. More compilation appearances and releases
followed in 2006 and 2007, including a cassette tape on
Best Kept Secret (Across Haymarket and the Triangle), a
single on Humblebee Recordings (A Hiding Smile), and a 3"
CD-R, That Happy Glow, via Cloudberry Records. The Apple
Orchard's debut full-length, "Half-Steps Toward Bright
Skies", was released on the brothers' homegrown label,
Haymarket Recordings, the following year. A mini-album,
Leafy Lanes, came out on the same label the following year,
and another 7" single, "A Month Of Spring", followed in
2010.
