Gorgeous 7-track compilation of psychedelic folk
and electronica from five artists residing in
Tampere, Finland. It was commissioned for
Tampere's 5th Triennial art exhibition and
conjures a typically spellbinding blend of
dreamstate sounds and detailed artwork that's
entirely native to the Fonal sensibility - a lush
and otherworldly aesthetic quite unlike anything
else in the world. Openings the A-side, the
charmingly monikered Motelli Skronkle was founded
in the early '90s by theatre actors Hannu
Raatikainen, Esko Varonen and the late Markku
Peltola (who also acted in Aki KaurismΣki's 'The
Man Without The Past') and present their first new
material in ten years; the surreally sweet and
intimate 'Riemuvoitto' and the bluesy throat-
singing styles of 'Presidentin miehet'. Meanwhile,
Kiila's jouhikko player Pekko KΣppi weaves a
fragile mesh of reversed loops and vocals called
'Oi Veljet' and Ville Leinonen utterly seduces
with the spindly Aphex-ian melody and tape FX of
'Nauha VOR024'. Death Hawks spike this tranquil
scene with a three-part dose of Sun City Girls-
like psychedelia on the B-side, veering between
drone Blues, scatty improv and kosmik lounge vibes
on 'Buddiman', while Tuusanuuskat follow up their
debut album with a kaleidoscopic, nine minute
dancefloor experiment called 'Kukkien Guantanamo
Bay'. Recommended!
