"The songs on this new EP. were written at my flat
in Oslo, and at Tricolor HQ, during the first
quiet weeks of 2012. Autumn In Arcadia had been
lying around, like so many songs, unfinishes for
many years. Listening to Mark Lanegan on my
headphones late one evening inspired me to pick it
up, I was thinking about Elvis too, and Harry
Bellafonte. Christer Knutsen and me hashed out the
arrangement together, adding those dreamy
arpeggios, tambourines and jangeling 12-strings.
The track also features my first ever guitar solo
on record, not very virtuoso, I know, but it does
what it's supposed to do...
I Was A Rolling Stone had been around for a while
too. The last half of it was recorded in the
summer of 2010 during the sessions for Prisoner Of
The Road. It was part of a ten minute epic which
ended up sounding a bit lame. The end bit though,
was magical, and it never escaped my mind. I wrote
a short intro for it and then we spliced the two
parts together while recording at Harry's Gym. It
was different, sort of semi-instrumental, but it
worked wonderfully. Hope you like it.
Where Is My Moon? was written from scratch. Our
newborn daughter was asleep in the room down the
hall, and I had to keep things down a bit while
working at night. The hushed vocal delivery stuck
with the tune through the recording session and is
there on the finished track, the scratchiness of
my voice comes from getting almost no sleep at
all. At Harry's Gym my band and I layed down ten
or fifteen takes of it. What you're hearing on the
EP is take 7, live and with no overdubs except for
Christer Knutsen's sweet harmony vocal in the
bridge.
So-Lo was another live performance. We were lucky
enough to get it in the first take. The initial
track featured me on vocals and acoustic, with
Christer playing piano in the next room. Then I
added the two tracks of noisy guitars, percussion
and those ultra-low backup voices in the chorus.
Cato came by the studio a few weeks later to add a
track of bass guitar. The song was the last one we
finished. Somehow it reminds me of some of the
stuff we used to do in Madrugada, it has that
doomy gospel feel to it.
While we had worked at Harry's Gym in very much
the same way as we did on Long Slow Distance, I
wanted to try something different with the mix for
this record. Tchad Blake had never really fallen
off my radar. He did a wonderful job with my first
solo album. Back then I was drawn to him because
of the work he had done on albums by Tom Waits,
Ron Sexsmith, Suzanne Vega and Richard Thompson.
In later years he has, among other things, mixed a
couple of very successful Black Keys albums. I
felt it was time to give him a call, and I'm glad
I did. After listening to the 10" vinyl version on
the old Tandberg stereo at Tricolor last night I'm
positive it's the best sounding record I've ever
made. Anyway, I'll let you be the judge of that.
