│║ For most heavy metal fans Helstar of course ║ │
│║ needs no introduction. With albums such as ║ │
│║ æBurning StarÆ, æRemnants Of WarÆ, æA Distant ║ │
│║ ThunderÆ and æNosferatuÆ has delivered a few ║ │
│║ classic albums and has reached a legendary ║ │
│║ status in the worldwide heavy and power metal ║ │
│║ scene. The band fronted by vocalist and metal ║ │
│║ veteran James Rivera (also known from Vicious ║ │
│║ Rumors, DestinyÆs End and Seven Witches) reached ║ │
│║ its thirtieth anniversary this year. To ║ │
│║ celebrate this event the band gave a special ║ │
│║ concert for their hometown audience in Houston, ║ │
│║ Texas, and filmed and recorded it for a live DVD ║ │
│║ and double live album that appeared in August. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Unfortunately my promo copy only contains the ║ │
│║ audio tracks, so I canÆt say anything about the ║ │
│║ visuals. But according to what I hear on this ║ │
│║ double-cd I can only imagine that it must have ║ │
│║ been one hell of a night there in Houston! The ║ │
│║ set contains a twenty-track set list with many ║ │
│║ classics, altogether good for two hours of pure ║ │
│║ heavy metal. The band was in great form that ║ │
│║ night and the adrenaline and enthusiasm is ║ │
│║ definitely audible on the record. I must say ║ │
│║ that IÆm not that crazy about the drum sound, ║ │
│║ and especially the snare sounds a bit weak. ║ │
│║ ThatÆs a bit of pity, because the songs could ║ │
│║ have sounded more powerful. Fortunately the ║ │
│║ guitar sound is quite good so that the fantastic ║ │
│║ riffs and solos of Barragan and Travino come ║ │
│║ into their own completely. Also mister Rivera is ║ │
│║ well audible in the mix, and heÆs performance is ║ │
│║ great in general. Ok, just like any other singer ║ │
│║ who has been in this business for this long, his ║ │
│║ voice also has tasted the test of time, but he ║ │
│║ still is one of the top vocalists in this genre. ║ │
│║ I just donÆt understand why the fantastic ║ │
│║ classic æBurning StarÆ is sung so poorly all of ║ │
│║ a sudden. Especially due to the fact that this ║ │
│║ song is quite early in the set, and the track ║ │
│║ before and after it do sound good. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Ah well, it doesnÆt really matter, because Æ30 ║ │
│║ Year Of HelÆ is a highly pleasant live-record ║ │
│║ and a great anthology of HelstarÆs long-running ║ │
│║ career. It is also wonderful to hear that the ║ │
│║ old tracks have withstood the test of time and ║ │
│║ still havenÆt lost their impact, while the new ║ │
│║ song prove that the band is very much alive. ║ │
│║ This package is of course a must-have for ║ │
│║ Helstar fans, but also very interesting for the ║ │
│║ fans of high-quality US heavy metal. Happy ║ │
│║ anniversary, gentlemen! ║ │
