│║ SwedenÆs Grave probably need no introduction to ║ │
│║ most given that, along with Entombed and ║ │
│║ Dismember, Grave are considered to be one of the ║ │
│║ founding fathers of Swedish death metal. Grave ║ │
│║ are also credited with having a huge hand in ║ │
│║ establishing what is now known as the Sunlight ║ │
│║ Studios sound. ║ │
│║ GraveÆs first two albums, 1991Æs Into The Grave ║ │
│║ and 1992Æs YouÆll Never Seeà are considered ║ │
│║ genre classics and, over the years, Grave have ║ │
│║ released a string of solid albums. The band ║ │
│║ broke up after 1996Æs rather poorly received ║ │
│║ Hating Life. A reformation occurred in 2003 with ║ │
│║ founding member Ola Lindgren firmly at the helm ║ │
│║ on guitars and vocals. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Grave, however, like so many others, have been ║ │
│║ subjected to a revolving door of band members ║ │
│║ ever since. Through it all, Lindgren has ║ │
│║ soldiered on. His persistence has paid off. ║ │
│║ Endless Procession Of Souls is the best album ║ │
│║ from Grave, period. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Endless Procession Of Souls has it all: ║ │
│║ absolutely crushing, devastating production, ║ │
│║ excellent musicianship with simple, effective ║ │
│║ riffs piled on top of one another, a mid-paced ║ │
│║ to galloping tempo and excellent songwriting. In ║ │
│║ short, Endless Procession Of Souls is about as ║ │
│║ near a perfect a Swedish death metal album as ║ │
│║ one could hope for. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Separating this album from not just the hordes ║ │
│║ of imitators that have appeared of late, but ║ │
│║ also from recent albums from Grave is a ║ │
│║ wholehearted embrace of the bandÆs previous ║ │
│║ flirtations with doom. Always one to flirt with ║ │
│║ the occasional slow dirge, Lindgren very subtly ║ │
│║ incorporates slow, lumbering riffs into song ║ │
│║ passages that more than evoke bands such as ║ │
│║ Triptykon with a great sense of weight and ║ │
│║ density. The effect, though subtly employed, is ║ │
│║ huge, and all the more enhanced by the best ║ │
│║ production on a Grave album that IÆve yet heard. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I cannot state this emphatically enough: Endless ║ │
│║ Procession Of Souls is GraveÆs best album and ║ │
│║ must be considered a defining moment in the ║ │
│║ discography of this veteran band. ║ │
