Whitney Houston was inarguably one of the biggest female
pop stars of all time. Her accomplishments as a hitmaker
were extraordinary; just to scratch the surface, she became
the first artist ever to have seven consecutive singles hit
number one, and her 1993 Dolly Parton cover "I Will Always
Love You" became nothing less than the biggest hit single
in rock history. Houston was able to handle big adult
contemporary ballads, effervescent, stylish dance-pop, and
slick urban contemporary soul with equal dexterity; the
result was an across-the-board appeal that was matched by
scant few artists of her era, and helped her become one of
the first black artists to find success on MTV in Michael
Jackson's wake. Like many of the original soul singers,
Houston was trained in gospel before moving into secular
music; over time, she developed a virtuosic singing style
given over to swooping, flashy melodic embellishments. The
shadow of Houston's prodigious technique still looms large
over nearly evey pop diva and smooth urban soul singer -
male or female - in her wake, and spawned a legion of
imitators. Always more of a singles artist, Houston largely
shied away from albums during the '90s, releasing the bulk
of her most popular material on the soundtracks of films in
which she appeared. By the end of the decade, she'd gone
several years without a true blockbuster, yet her status as
an icon was hardly diminished..
"Greatest Love of All" was written by Michael Masser and
Linda Creed and originally recorded by George Benson for
the 1977 Muhammad Ali biopic "The Greatest". The song was
later popularized by Whitney Houston. Clive Davis, founder
of Houston's label Arista Records, was initially against
Houston recording the song for her debut studio album,
"Whitney Houston", but he eventually gave in after persuasion
from Houston and Masser. It was released as the B-side to
the single "You Give Good Love", a previous Top 5 hit by
Houston. The song was eventually released as a single in
its own right in April 1986, and became the seventh release
from Houston's debut album, and spent three weeks at #1 on
the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May of that year. Houston's
album version features a piano intro, while the single version
begins with a keyboard intro. After the single became a success,
it replaced the original album version on subsequent pressings
of the album. However, the original album version was restored
for the 2010 Deluxe Anniversary Edition reissue of the album.

Release note: while "Someone For Me (12-inch Dance Remix)"
was included on the 2010 Deluxe Anniversary Edition of the
"Whitney Houston" album, the versions of the other two songs
wasn't. Title track "Greatest Love Of All" here appears in
its single version with the keyboard intro, and this version
of "Thinking About You" is a short and re-arranged 12-inch edit
version compared to the album version. So no dupe.
