█░ Palmetto Records (USA) presents: ░█
█░ Frank Kimbrough - Lullabluebye ░█
█░ (PM-2100) ░█
█░ ░█
█░ Personnel: ░█
█░ Frank Kimbrough : piano ░█
█░ Ben Allison : bass ░█
█░ Matt Wilson : drums ░█
█░ ░█
█░ Born in Roxboro, North Carolina, Kimbrough has been playing piano ░█
█░ since before he can remember. The son of a piano teacher, he was a ░█
█░ church organist by the age of 12 and formed his first bands before ░█
█░ he began high school. After becoming interested in jazz, he left ░█
█░ school and found work in Chapel Hill, NC, and Washington, DC, ░█
█░ before moving to New York City in 1981. In 1985 he began ░█
█░ researching the music of Herbie Nichols and ten years later was ░█
█░ awarded a Jazz Performance Fellowship by the NEA to fund ░█
█░ performances of Nichols' music. The Herbie Nichols Project has ░█
█░ released three highly acclaimed recordings, including Strange City ░█
█░ on Palmetto Records, and continues to tour internationally. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ Kimbrough's reputation as accomplished composer, leader and ░█
█░ bandleader is spreading: He's received funding from Chamber Music ░█
█░ America; has recorded as a leader in solo, duo, trio and quartet ░█
█░ formats (with his quartet, Noumena); and has been selected three ░█
█░ years running in DOWNBEAT'S Critics Poll. DOWNBEAT wrote: "Frank ░█
█░ Kimbrough displays both a markedly original voice and a rare depth ░█
█░ of conception. " ░█
█░ ░█
█░ Since 1993 Kimbrough has recorded and toured internationally with ░█
█░ the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and appears on her ░█
█░ GRAMMY-nominated CDs Coming About and Allegresse. Other sideman ░█
█░ credits include recordings and/or performances with Ron Horton, ░█
█░ Kendra Shank, Rick Margitza, Rich Perry, Lee Konitz and Eddie ░█
█░ Gale. Kimbrough taught music at New York University from ░█
█░ 1996-2001, and has conducted master classes at the New School ░█
█░ University, University of Iowa, Oberlin College Conservatory, ░█
█░ Appalachian State University, Paris Conservatory and Oxford ░█
█░ University among others. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ Words from Frank ░█
█░ Every time I play music, it's a special occasion, but especially ░█
█░ when I'm playing with these gentlemen. I've worked with Ben and ░█
█░ Matt in several Jazz Composers Collective groups (the Herbie ░█
█░ Nichols Project, Ted Nash and Still Evolved, Michael Blake's Free ░█
█░ Association, and Ron Horton's quartet), but this is our first ░█
█░ opportunity to record as a trio. There are no arrangements per se ░█
█░ - we try to let the music happen in an organic way, so that each ░█
█░ time we play, it's different. My main objective as a composer is ░█
█░ to give each player something to work with as an improviser, so ░█
█░ that we make music that's honest, interactive, and in the moment. ░█
█░ I think we've accomplished that here, and I hope you'll enjoy the ░█
█░ results. ░█
█░ ░█
█░ Here are a few notes on the tunes: ░█
█░ Lullabluebye is a twenty-two bar form, in C. It's about the blues ░█
█░ and simplicity. Centering is part of a larger work commissioned by ░█
█░ Chamber Music America's Doris Duke Jazz Ensembles Project. The ░█
█░ melody is based on an augmented triad, which is centered over the ░█
█░ chord changes in various ways. It's about finding one's place (and ░█
█░ perhaps a little peace) in the world. Kid Stuff was composed just ░█
█░ a few days before the session, and this is its first performance. ░█
█░ I'd like to dedicate this one to Ben and Matt, because it's about ░█
█░ contentment and the happiness of playing music together. Ode is ░█
█░ for my dear friend, the pianist/composer (and Palmetto recording ░█
█░ artist) Andrew Hill. It's in quasi - free time, but follows a ░█
█░ strict form. It's about perseverance and dignity. We sometimes use ░█
█░ Whirl as a set-closer. The blowing is free, with the bridge ░█
█░ reappearing on cue in various guises. It's about taking risks. ░█
█░ Ghost Dance is inspired in part by the music of Annette Peacock. ░█
█░ There are two sections, and in performance, the form may be ░█
█░ improvised. It's about the beauty of silence and grace. You Only ░█
█░ Live Twice was composed by John Barry and is from the James Bond ░█
█░ movie. Ron Brendle, a bassist and one of my oldest friends, ░█
█░ introduced me to this tune a few years ago. It's the only ░█
█░ "standard" on the disk. Fu Bu is exactly half a statement. It's a ░█
█░ small repeated idea, with the melody superimposed in free time ░█
█░ over it. It's about the importance of questioning authority. I ░█
█░ remember playing Ben's Tune for the first time several years ago ░█
█░ at a session - we almost forgot about it, but looking through a ░█
█░ pile of tunes just before the date, I came across it and thought ░█
█░ it would be fun to play, so I brought it in. Eventualities comes ░█
█░ from an idea that's been sitting in one of my sketchbooks for ░█
█░ quite a while. Ben determines the chord changes from a given set ░█
█░ of notes - written over a G pedal, he's free to play whatever ░█
█░ feels right at the moment. The chromatic line floats over the ░█
█░ bass, and different harmonic possibilities arise as a result. ░█
█░ These eventualities provide the element of surprise, so it's about ░█
█░ dealing with whatever comes up. ░█
