With every release since Wot GorillaÆs debut EP in 2010, the Halifax quartet
have excelled in musical quality and technicality, demonstrating a unique level
of understanding within the band. And this is no different on their debut long
player, Kebnekaise. Kicking off with the bizarrely named instrumental opener æI
Beat Up The Bathroom. IÆm SorryÆ, youÆre not so much pushed as you are thrown
into Wot GorillaÆs crazy world of ideas and wackiness. The two hard panned
guitars seamlessly intertwine with one another; Mat HeighÆs more aggressive,
jagged, distorted tones are perfectly complimented with Ben FarnellÆs sweeter
melodic lines, until they both come together in gloriously satisfying harmony
within crystal clean breakdowns. By now, if youÆre familiar with Wot Gorilla?
then youÆll expect time signatures to regularly change quicker than you can
shout æAbergavennyÆ; they duly donÆt disappoint as each change is executed with
frighteningly pinpoint accuracy.

Recent single æIsÆ is as close to a classic as WG? have delivered so far, as
HeighÆs screeching vocals bellow ôgive me what I want and forget all the things
we spoke ofö. Despite the sheer madness going on underneath, they still manage
to deliver a tremendous vocal hook urging you to sing-along; a quality shared
with the likes of Tubelord et al. Other picks include æ655Æ, a rearrangement of
æ6 Double 5 3 2 1Æ from their debut EP, which will put smiles on the faces of
hardened Wot Gorilla? fans; jumpy and erratic proposition æHold Me BackÆ, which
has a Fall Of Troy essence and closer/latest single æSnow WhiteÆ manages to
combine the trademark WG? formula along with more heavy metal double bass pedal
craziness.

This album may cause vertigo in listeners of primarily, dare I say it, more
simplistic music. However, if youÆre a fanatic of this genre (which if youÆre
reading this, probably are) then this is a sublime body of work demonstrating
confidence and musical prowess. Kebnekaise is one of the must-haves for all math
rock fans in 2012. Expect to see lots more of these guys as they take the record
around the country later this year.
