"A Life Once Lost is one of those bands that often appeared on my proverbial
radar but I never bothered to check them out. That is until now, because the
band is about to release their latest album, Ecstatic Trance. It their first
release in five years.
On Ecstatic Trance the ALOL guys look to different sub-genres for musical
inspiration. There are traces of mathcore (Ion Dissonance, early Dillinger
Escape Plan, Converge), a fair bit of groove (Lamb Of God, Mastodon) and itÆs
also technical/progressive enough to strike a nerve with the Textures and
Meshuggah crowd.
Despite the scantily hidden influences, A Life Once Lost nevertheless managed
to create quite a sound of their own. The band sounds mercilessly driven on
Ecstatic Trance, but luckily there are some moments where a listener can catch
their breath, thus enhancing the overall listening experience.
The bandÆs main main weapon is their seamless ability to write well
constructed songs with ôGnawing Lisp,ö ôMadness Is Godö and ôPeople Stareö
being some exceptional fine examples of their craft. The piercing screams by
Robert Meadows gives the music a relentless edge, but there isnÆt much
variation in his delivery. This is the only real complaint I have about
Ecstatic Trance. A little more diversity in the vocal department would make
all the difference in the world.
Producer Andreas Magnusson, also known from his previous work with The Black
Dahlia Murder and Impending Doom, did a stellar job in the sound department.
He gave Ecstatic Trance a harsh, yet modern sound, further enhancing the ôtake
no prisonersö attitude of the album.
The screams by Robert Meadows still donÆt sit well with me, but otherwise
thereÆs plenty to enjoy on Ecstatic Trance. The overall quality of the songs
is high, the grooves are tight and the band is clearly on fire on this record.
Certainly worth your attention if youÆre into well crafted and intelligent
music."
