The Preamble
Reynos is a young rapper of Dominican heritage that grew up in
the tough neighborhood of Washington Heights, New York. I am a
middle-aged white musician that was raised in the suburban mean
streets of Westchester, California. During those dog days, I had
to fight to procure an acne cream that really worked and take a
summer job to afford my Frank Zappa albums. Reynos is
21-year-old street poet that is in touch with the dangerous,
violent culture of gangster hip-hop. Conversely, I am more than
twice his age; and my definition of a gangster is a guy who
carried a Tommy gun in movies that were badly acted by Ray
Danton. Therefore, I believe this renders me eminently qualified
to critique the upcoming Reynos record entitled Stand Up.
A Cultural Exchange
In the biography kindly provided by Reynos publicity team, it
stated that, ôHe fills the gap between æbling blingÆ and violent
gangster hip hop by just being real.ö During my exhaustive
research of the meaning of the term ôbling-bling,ö I discovered
that this is a colloquial expression for expensive jewelry. I
will surely experience sweet repose this evening knowing that
this chasm has not been left unfilled. Reynos is classified as a
ôfreestyleö hip-hop artist, which is what I believe beat
generation authors like Ginsberg, Kerouac and Burroughs used to
call stream-of-consciousness poetry.
The Review
As a hip-hop artist, Reynos clearly understands the beat poetry
of his generation and conveys his thoughts with authority.
Though I will not pretend to understand many elements of his
message, his freestyle lyrics have a solid, rhythmic flow. The
music tracks of his well produced record draw from soul, jazz,
Latin and rock music. Highlights of the disc include track
three, ôI Do Dis,ö which offers up a well-placed classical
violin part to accompany the verse lyric and chorus melody.
ôTobaco y Ronö is a cover of a famous Cuban song featuring a
multihued arrangement and smooth female vocal samples (Or, could
they be real singers?) ôI Need to Knowö has what I believe is
the best chorus melody, wonderfully supported by acoustic piano
and synthesizer pads. ôUnderstand Whyö presents an earnest,
powerful message about the meaning of family who must struggle
to exist in the frequently violent inner city. This musically
haunting number is a winning combination of delicate sounds and
lyrical mood. In the opinion of this not-too-hip, middle-aged
white man: for those who enjoy the freestyle genre of hip hop,
Reynos may be a serious contender for the heavyweight belt.
